Question:
I am 3 weeks post-op {open distal RNY} everything has been going fine, except the
last few days, my leg muscles have been so sore. I am drinking about 50-60 oz. of h2o per day, getting my protein in and I am walking about a mile each day. Has anyone else experienced this, or know what the cause is? Any input would be valued! Thanks Dani — Dani J. (posted on February 1, 2000)

Dani, you may be low in potassium and/or calcium. Try drinking orange juice
everyday and don't forget to take your
calcium supplements-vivactive or tums will do. Good luck. Sandy RN

Hi Dani: I second that potassium/calcium suggestion, especially if it's a
crampy feeling in the legs. Also, I experienced leg soreness a few weeks
after my surgery (labs were good). I would compare it to using your
muscles again after a period of inactivity. It passed without incident.
Good luck! Jaye Carl, RN, open proximal RNY 7-29-99, 90 pounds gone
forever!

You might try taking some regular over the counter potassium. Try just 2
per day until your doc checks your labs.

I would say it is the walking. Do not stop. Stretch your legs before and
after the walk. Try the library for magazines or books on stretching.
