Question:
I was just wondering if anyone that has had the bypass surgery has had prior
abdominal surgery? I have had a tubal reversal that was open but it is in the lower part of the belly. Help would be appreciated. Thanks — Natalie J. (posted on March 18, 2004)

I had had two c-sections, tubal-ligation, and gall bladder removed. My
gastric bypass was open. I have since had TT. No problems. Good luck.

I have had other abdominal surgeries, they were appendix which was a
emergency op and I had to be cut from my belly button straight down. also a
emergency hernia op. and a gallbadder op. plus WLS. next hopefully my TT
etc. Because of my high wt and prier operations my surgeon decided the open
RNY was best for me because of the old adhesives left from past surgeries.

I had my open RNY on Dec. 9th with no complications..Prior to that I had 3
c-section and hystromecty (sp)...My surgeon and I desided to just do the
Open RNY rather than lap, and that was the only difference for me.. Best of
luck, God Bless you on your journey...I love your profile page..

I had my lap RNY in 2000. Prior to that I had had three major
lower-abdominal "open" surgeries, as well as a
"traditional" gall bladder surgery which left me with a 7"
diagonal scar under my right ribcage. How your surgeon addresses the
question of previous surgeries and the inevitability of post-op adhesions
(underlying scarring) from those surgeries, will vary from surgeon to
surgeon. Our surgeon specializes in lap WLS, and had no concerns at all
about those issues. In fact, he encountered "massive" adhesions
from my gallbladder surgery, and simply removed those at the same time as
my lap RNY. When you find a surgeon that meets your needs, the issue of
"open" or "lap" as influenced by previous surgeries, is
a decision only that surgeon can make...he/she knows their level of
expertise and their own clinical "comfort zone". However, as a
general rule, most WLS surgeons feel that prior lower-abdominal surgeries
rarely effect WLS which takes place in the upper abdominal area. Best
wishes!

I am the queen of surgeries LOL.. I had a diaphranial hernia as an infant,
3 Cesections, gallbadder , belly button hernia, adrenialectomy and my
gastric bypass surgery then had to have a second surgery to repair a leak..
I am having a breast reduction and lift with a hernia repair on May 5th
and hopefully if I can get my appeal overturned I will have a TT as well..

Well, my family makes fun of me for all the work I have had done in just
3yrs, but I see im actually doing ok and am not alone! I had my gallbladder
removed, tubes tide, open rny and now a tt w/ pubic lift and have not had

I had a bowel obstruction and had to have a bowel resection in feb, 2002.
I had rny in Feb, 2003. Had a lot of scar tissue that took the surgeon
five hours to remove. I did have to have open.
