I am an accountant. The burden is on you to prove this to the IRS in case of an audit. The surgeon didn't give you a bill or invoice listing the procedure? Do you have a copy of the cashier's check? You need some type of documentantion of the medical procedure.

Your Medical Expenses also have to EXCEED 7.55 of your AGI

According to the IRS website (www.irs.gov), the medical expenses must exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. But it's not quite as good as it sounds. Say you have a combined household income of $65,000. In order to claim medical expenses, you'd have to have paid over $4,875 out of pocket. And if you did, you only get to take anything that you paid out over and above the $4,875 as a deduction....however, if this is the case, then you can also claim ALL medical expenses for your whole household during the year....office visits, dental visits and dental work, vision exams, glasses, prescriptions and prescription co-pays, etc. The IRS site even says that laser eye surgery is deductible! I'm able to deduct my medical expenses for last year because of my reconstructive surgery....I wish I'd know that since I was over my allotted 7.5% of my AGI that anything else could have been deducted in it's entirety....then me and my hubby would have both definitely had the laser eye surgery! Good luck to you!
