Question:
I'M SO HUNGRY!!! I had lunch at about 12:00. I can only get down a few bites
And now it's 3:30 and I feel like I'm starving. I'm afraid to eat something because is it grazing if I eat something now?? — Michelle J. (posted on December 23, 2003)

Depends on your surgeon's rules, I guess, but I eat 5-6 times a day
(counting protein shakes), small meals, protein first, and I would consider
a three-hour break between meals typical, not "grazing." Depends
on what you're eating, though ... protein first, always. Most carbs will
flow right through you, relatively easily, and won't satisfy for very long.

To me, grazing is when you eat constantly or take more than 30 minutes to
eat a meal. On my doctor's plan, three hours is not too long. I think you
had surgery about the same time I did but I've only been hungry a couple of
times since I had surgery and both times were after I ate something with
carbs. If I do get very hungry, I go ahead and eat something but I make
sure it is high protein and that I eat it slowly to make sure it does its
job. A protein drink will help with the hunger too. Then I drink water,
water, water which always help. So, check back in on your doctor's plan
and see what he/she recommended, try to go by that, and if it isn't working
for you, let the doctor know.

EAT!!!!!!!!!! If you are hungry, eat... you dont have to eat much and I am
sure you CANT... so if you are hungry eat.. it took me a long time to feel
like I wasnt "cheating" I always felt sooo guilty about eating
anything. But even WE have to eat! Dont feel guilty for being hungry!

EAT (as others have said lol). I am 18 months out and still eat every 3
hours or so. This helps keep my blood sugar levels balanced and reduces
that shaky-sicky feeling.

Michelle,
I have to laugh, cuz we're all saying the same thing; "EAT!"
LOL It's a joke around my house...I'll eat something and, of course, have
leftovers more times than not on my plate....kids & hubby all say the
same thing: 'Just leave it there, Mom will eat the rest in a couple of
hours' ~ LOLOL ~ I'm the family billy goat now or new born infant that
comes with feeding instructions: "Feed every 3-4 hours as
needed" LOLOL You're perfectly normal! Just eat healthy and don't be
hungry - your body need the nourishment.

I agree with the others...eat, don't starve yourself. Just focus on WHAT
YOU EAT IN BETWEEN MEALS. Even people that have lost weight w/o WLS eat 6-
small meals a day. So go ahead and eat. Just focus on healthy eating
habits. I usally eat a Gold Balance bar (carmel nut blast) and a diet coke
around 3:30 pm everyday and I too usally have lunch around 12 noon.

Michelle, ditto to what the others are saying. At almost 2 years post-op,
I still eat every few hours. The key is to try to eat something healthy,
preferably protein and in small amounts. Grazing is mindless non-stop
eating like sitting at your desk at work nibbling on holiday cookies or
candy...
