Question:
I have a horrible habit of biting my fingernails.
Suppose this isn't good for my pouch, huh? — Michelle J. (posted on October 24, 2003)

From this post, I would assume your biting then SHALLOWING your nails, I
would think it wouldnt be good for anyone regardless... If your not
shallowing them, just biting wouldnt affect your pouch at all. Have you
tried putting something on your nails to stop?

I have to wear acrylic nails, otherwise I go back to the old habit. I am
not even aware of the nail biting. I never try to bite the acrylic nails.

just stop doing it!! oops sorry only kidding i would reommend getting
acrylic nails, you can bite them, but its not the smae it will break the
habit, was a common practice in the cosmetology industry to put nails on a
biter! short ones at first so they get use to them and your hands look so
good you like it that helps too.

EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! You swallow them? Nasty! If you can't stop biting, at
least spit out the bits in a napkin.
LOL!

Hi Michelle, I was thinking along the lines of Helen... When my (autistic)
son was in pre-school he was a biter. They would put vinegar in his mouth
every time he bit another child. I know - extreme, but it worked! So
anyway, maybe if you dipped your fingers in vinegar it would be such an
aweful taste you wouldn't want to. or tabasco, or finger nail polish
remover or some such nasty tasting thing.
Another possibility is to go get weekly manicures. If they are pretty and
polished you might want to keep them that way?
Good luck with whatever you try!

I was a nail biter for as long as I can remember until I went and had
acrylic nails put on. As someone mentioned before, you can bite those but
it's not the same and I was able to break the habit. Now I don't wear
acrylic overlays but I have my own long, pretty nails :) If I can quit,
anyone can..LOL good luck!

I too hoped I could break this nasty habit as a new post op. No luck. I'm
almost 46 and I hate how it looks and feels but nothing has helped. I tried
those nasty tasting things you paint on.... but as bad as it tasted I still
could'nt stop. Someone told me to put chicken sh** on my nails and I'd
stop. I have chickens, but that's one piece of advice that "is for the
birds". (Pun intended). As far as the nails hurting the pouch....
well... it does'nt. I hate to admit.

I was a nail biter as a kid. When I got older it occured to me one day the
fact that our hands aren't always as clean as we may like to think they
are, especially under the nails. Don't risk your healthy new you by an
avoidable infection that may come from putting your hands in your mouth.
Cured me of the habit 25 years ago! Good luck.

I used Christal's method and am now a recovering nail biter myself. My Mom
swears I came out of the womb biting my nails. Haven't bitten them since
about mid July. Don't have the tips nor acrylic overlay on anymore and am
quite happy with the way they're shaping up! :)

Hey does anyone know if those acrylic nails come in a very short sixe? I
mean, I don't want those ugly long ones women seem to think are so sexy.
They are a real turn off on the ladies, and I'm sure would make a guy even
creepier. lol. Anyway if they have really short ones I'd love to try this.
I really want to beat this habit. :) Thanks.

I second the acrylic nails idea. Personally the longer the better they
look. Jen wears them at my suggestion. Only they are NEVER long enough for
me:) Had a old girl friend that wore them to stop biting her real nails.
100% effective and she gave excellent back scratches after that too.

The only ways I stopped biting my nails: getting rid of as much stress as
possible and acrylic nails. Both of these things really do work. Pepper,
gloves, bad-tasting nail polish and tabasco do not work. Good luck!
