Question:
I'm 8 days post op, and what I've been doing is making me sick...
Physically I feel better every day! I need help... what should I be eating? I'm sick to death of chicken broth and since I'm only 8 days post op is there anything else I can be eating? I tried some baby foods and everyone I tried made me literally sick to my stomach. I'm not whining, I'm not complaining, and I am still absolutely excited about the future, I just need a little help in the diet department. Thanks for your time! MJ — Michelle J. Hi. I don't know what your Dr's requirements are for your post op diet.
If you are allowed purees/soft solids, some of the things I ate were: egg
drop soup, scrambled eggs with cheese over it, tuna or deli turkey w/ lite
mayo in the food processor, refried beans with shredded cheddar cheese
melted over it, Dannon Lite and Fit yogurt, unsweetened apple sauce, cottage
cheese, and just about anything that can be processed into a soft or
spreadable texture. I kept away from white meat chicken and turkey unless
it was the deli type that I processed, meat, and raw fruits and vegetables
for several months. Good luck!!

When I was 8 days post-op my favorite thing was V8 Juice. Other juices and
broth tasted nasty to me. What does your surgeon say you should be eating.
All liquids, clear liquids, or soft foods? Call and ask what you can try.

Have you tried any protein shakes? I have been drinking Real Meals since 6
days post op and that boost of protein really made me feel so much better.
I was like you and sickened by most of the liquid stuff and baby food was
out of the question. I think it was a texture thing. I could tolerate
cottage cheese and Dannon Liight n' Fit Creamy yogurt but not much else. I
still drink my shakes every day and have had really good success with no
real plateaus and I really attribute it to getting my protein up to 60
grams right from the start.

EAS Advantage Whey Protein Shakes are good...especially in chocolate. You
can mix with skim milk or water. You can buy a container at wal-mart.
Walmart carries a variety of protein shakes, even some pre-made in little
juice box containers. Also, Wal mart carries a sugar free/fat free creamy
yogurt. The brand is blue bunny. The strawberry and key lime pie is great.
Now I am still pre-op, but these are things my nutritionist told me to
start buying and eating to up proteins prior to surgery. Also you can find
sugar free applesauce. I think Mussleman's is the only brand I know of
right now. Good luck!

Hi Michelle, I just wanted to say that I soooooooo feel you about the
chicken broth thing. I am a little over 6 months post op, and chicken
broth still makes me gag! But, here is what I did, in my liquid stage. I
went to Target, and bought a 10 dollar food processor, a can of vegetable
beef soup, blended it, and then heated on the stove. I did that with
several soups, and boy it got me through, and it gave me some much needed
energy. I hope this helps! Good luck and God Bless! :)

Try some different soups and forget using chicken or beef broth (from the
cube or powder) For example, buy campbells beef vegetable and strain out
the ingredients so all you have is liquid. It tastes SOOOO much better
than broth and is a great change. If you're on full liquids, you can try
tomato, cream of celery, creamy chicken, etc. THE BEST thing without a
dobut is if you can get someone to (or if you do it yourself) make homemade
soup, it tastes so much better than anything else. But, it's a lot of
work, I know. My MIL was kind enough to make a KILLER turkey stew for me-
I just strained it. It was HEAVEN. Good luck to you. This is a tough
stage, but this too shall pass!

When I was on the liquid part of the diet I lived on the following:
* Soup: Campbels 98% Fat Free Chicken, and other flavors. You must strain
it to take out the food bits but it was great. Add your milk and powder
milk to add more protein.
Note: When I moved to baby foods I still loved my soup but I added Fat
Free Cheese, plus milk, etc., microwaved it and I loved it. Stay away from
tomato until you have tried other foods. I'm six months post-op and I eat
lots of different soups (all with no salt added, see your health food
stores and I add my vegs, cheese, etc. If I have vegetable or lentil soup
I blend it first, add cheese, power milk, add other veges, and it my meal.
You have to see what you can handle.
* Liquids: ISOPURE (ZERO CARBS) great cold has lots of protein (find at
GMC) grape, orange, etc.
* Yogurt without fruit on the bottom (remember you are only having about 2
oz.) and add your power milk.
* Try soy products. I find I do not eat as much beef. Not that I can't I
just don't enjoy it as much.
* Carnation Instant Breakfast (Sugar Free) mix with skim and power milk.
* Jay Robb's Whey Protein mix as 21 gram of protein mix with milk and you
have more protein. Find in health food stores. Comes in Chocolate,
Strawberry.
* SF Jello, SF Pudding with power milk add for extra protein.
When you start to add other foods you should blend them. I have a small
chopper (food processor) and when I moved to semi soft foods it was great.
I put my tuna, sammon, shrimp, hard boiled eggs. You can buy deviled ham
in a can which is very soft and tastes great.
Go to the store (can meats) and read the labels. I found a great salad
dressing that you will love. The maker is Walden. Go on line and check
them out WALDENFARMS.COM They have a great CHOCOLATE SYRUP that is sugar
free and has no carbs.
I will take 1 cup of hot water, 1 TBP of Swisse Mocha (international coffee
SF and FF), 1/2 cup of skim milk add some power milk and 1 tsp of chocolate
syrup and you have a great cup of coffee for dessert. Very few calories,
you have your protein and calcium, and a dessert drink with no sugar. Love
it.
I'm 6 months post-op and I've lost 118 lbs and feel great. I have had no
problems eating any foods. Please keep in mine everyone is different.
I was told by my doctor to introduce one food a day and see how your
stomach takes it. If you have a hard time stop and don't introduce that
food again for a couple of weeks.
Example: When I moved off liquids and started semi-soft foods I started
with eggs. I ate eggs for the entire day (3 meals).
Remember to take baby steps. I was on liquids for about 10 days, moved to
semi soft foods (baby foods, blended foods), then regular foods. When I
had liquids for that long I loved the bady foods (chicken was great!)
I have found this great SF sandwich pickle that tastes great! I have three
or four with a slice of turkey and slice of FF cheese.
I can eat almonds which is a great source of protein and good fat. Atkins
has a great Breakfast bar (apple crisp) that I love. I work and go to
school so it makes a great quick meal. I've tried beef jerky (from health
food store) and loved it for a quick meal on the go.
The time will come when you can enjoy different foods. I was a BIG CARB
eater and know I don't eat any breads or pasta at all. I get my carbs from
the fruit and veges I eat.
I wish you the best of luck. Drop me a line and let me know how you are
doing. You may want to talk to a dietician. My insurance covered a
dietician so I asked my primary doctor to see her before and after my
surgery to get an idea of what I should eat. You may also want to find a
support group. I kept pushing for one in my area and the hospital has just
formed one. It will be a great place to find out what others are eating
and ask other questions you may have.
