Question:
I am 11 weeks Post Op and...

have lost 100lbs. This is with very little excercise ( maybe once a week walking ) If I continue on the path of very little excercise how much can I expect my weight loss to slow? Also how much excercise should I be acheiving on a daily basis? Any feedback would help. --TJ Open RNY 4/16/03 527/426/?    — TJ M. (posted on July 5, 2003)

My wife had the RNY, never exercised or followed the eating plan early on and stalled out 75 pounds over goal. Beware and get moving. Surgery has risks why not take full advantage of it?

I dont know about you but I exersise every day 2 hours a day.. I follow what the doctor says .. when you say you lost 100 pounds at 11 weeks and dont exersise it kinda gets me upset> I am fighting for every pound to come off.. I have lost 50 pounds in 15 weeks and I am on a plateau...

it depends on what weight your at. because you are a "heavyweight", like myself (I started at 355)- we will loose weight much faster than "lightweights"... but once we are near the 250 mark- our weight loss will slow down. lightweights that start off at 250, will loose slower than someone at 400... see what i mean? so ride the wave for now, but once you near the 250-300 mark, i would increase my exercise, a lot! good luck.

I have not had the surgery yet but in the past when I would hit a plateau I would increase my protein and get just a little extra fat for a day opr 2 and then the pounds would fly off. Good Luck!

I started as a lightweight (276) and I have lost 92 pounds in 4 months. That being said, I WORK FOR EVERY POUND TO COME OFF!! I excercise AT LEAST three hours a day, every day. I work my butt off, literally. I would have to say, I assume that with no excercise your weight loss will stop way short of what you had hoped. My Dr. wants us to work out a MINIMUM of 45 minutes per day, every day.

Exercise is important in maintaining lean muscle mass. The weight you are losing may be lean muscle rather than fat, and exercising (resistance training) helps prevent that. You are really going to have to start doing something, or your loss will stall eventually. Just start with what you can do now, and build up to more. I personally think 3 hours a day is a bit excessive, but then again, we're all different. :)

I would STRONGLY advise you to talk to a lisenced trainer or physical therapist before you start any exercise program. I have found that I can only do very moderate exercise without adverse effects on my energy levels and it is based on calories in and calories out. When I discussed my whole picture (nutrition, etc...) with mine he agreed that what I was doing was the max for me and that is at 180 pounds. Also if you have any kind of joint issues you should have someone check out exactly what that is and advise you as to the type of exercise you should do. You could very easily injure yourself. I am not an avid exerciser but have a much more active lifestyle post op. Any more than 3-4 times a week (just brisk walking for 3-4 miles) for me and I am in a deficit in the energy area. Oh and whatever you do stay hydrated! Exercising in the hot months has made it hard for me to stay hydrated.

I don't think anyone can really answer your question well because so many variables are in play. Depends on what sex you are (men lose so much quicker and easier than women - no, not making light of how hard you guys work :>) , what your diet is like and what your diet history is like as well. If you've lost and gained (yo=yo dieting a lot) then that can impact how well the weight will slip off on its own and how much exercise will impact that. I agree with others though that after checking with your doctor that you should get on some kind of an exercise regimen...even just walking is better than nothing - 3 times a week for 30 minutes - IN oxygen. If you are gasping, your not getting a lot of benefit from it :>) Good luck!

Our surgeon says if we dont get into daily exercise weight regain is to be expected. After going thru all this do you want to gain it back?
