Question:
6 Weeks Out, Susceptible to Dumping- When should I try fresh fruit?

Hi. I'm almost 6 weeks out and I would like to start eating some fresh fruit. I'm very susceptible to dumping and would like to know what amounts and types of fruit work for others. One more unrelated question: about how many ounces does a "normal" stomach hold? Thanks all.    — Bonnie R. (posted on June 12, 2003)

it is my understanding that the average "normal" stomach is about 30 ounces. And some fresh fruits that are low in natural sugars are berries (especially blue berries) and cantaloupe.

Most docs won't let you eat fresh fruit or veggies until you have lost 75-80% of your excess weight. Usually not nearly as early out as you are. Ask your doctor.

Hi, I dumped on fruit big time for the first 6-7 months. I just tried it again for the first time after 9months and had no problem. I have only tried berries, melon, and bananas. Good luck!

I disagree with Delores (sorry, Delores!) and think that many surgeons allow their patients to eat fresh fruits within the first month or so. As to whether you dump on fruit or not, which is a natural sugar and not processed, everyone is different. I suggest you eat a small amount of whatever fruit you choose at first, to see how you react. With summer coming up, the fruits in season are too luscious to pass up! I've heard the average stomach is 40 oz, or the size of a football.

That's okay Cindy. We can disagree and love each other still. I ate a few bites of apple the other day and thought I was going to die. No dumping but like a big hard rock in my pouch, I have, however, had cantelope and watermelon with no problems.

I'm almost 6 weeks post-op. When I was still on soft foods, I could eat bananas really well. I don't eat them so much any more but in the last week I've tried nectarines and grapes. Both tasted delicious and I didn't have any problems with them. One thing I've learned with this surgery is that every person is different. What one person can tolerate, the next person can't. Good luck to you!

I haven't had my surgery yet, but a close friend of mine has. She was allowed to eat some fruit. She was told, however, to peel the fruit. Grapes, apples, peaches, nectarines.... etc. Her doctor told her that fruit peels would be harder to digest. Even oranges -- the thin skin on the wedges can be hard to digest. Of course, each person is different and may digest things easier than others.

EVERY ONE IS DIFFERENT AND EVERY DOC DOES DIFFERENT THINGS. With that said, my doc said it was ok for us to try fruit at about 3 weeks out as long as it is peeled and we chew, chew, chew. I tried an apple, banana, orange, melons, strawberries, grapes with out any problems. That doest mean you will be that lucky. Try one thing at a time and make sure it is chewed well, all with your doc's approval of course. Just my 2 cents. ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02 down 100 and counting.
