Question:
how does alcohol affect the body post op?

ONE drink will likely make yo legally intoxicated and get you a DUI. This
happened to a member of our support group. Its VERY hard on the liver too.
WLS is not for people with existing out of control drinking problems.

I've read that one drink affects your liver like 5 drinks pre-op. A recent
study suggested that even moderate drinking can lead to cirrhosis in a
post-op. Yikes! Bob is right about the effects. A half glass of wine
gets me tipsy, and one night at a party I had a couple of glasses (over a
period of about 4 hours) and was sick as a dog the next day. I haven't
felt like that since college. Haven't touched the stuff since.

I'm 13 months post op and tried a glass of wine last week and 1/4 glass
went right to my head and I stopped. I've never had a drink hit me that
hard or fast before.

I'm with Donna's post, I barely drink, but one glass of wine and I'm too
the curb. A real cheap date, so I stay as far away from alcohol as
possible.

Yup, definitely a cheap date! I usually cannot even finish a whole glass
of wine. Hits you harder and faster than pre-op.

ALcohol makes my stomach burn. It gives me cramps.

And if you had RNY, you might also dump from it depending on what you have.
Pina Coladas, Amaretto, and other sweet drinks could cause these problems.
I'm 7 1/2 months post-op and haven't had any alcohol yet, so I don't know
how it will personally affect me. I never was much of a drinker so I don't
miss it.

I drank about 3 or 4 ounces of beer last week....and, it felt like I drank
several beers. However, for as fast as it hit me, it left me. My
"buzz" was gone in about an hour. And, Bob is right... alcohol
can really wreak havoc on our livers...so please, go easy.

Maybe once every three years I'll have a Grasshopper. I'm two years post op
and have had two or three Grasshoppers since then. Before WLS they made me
warm and alittle light headed. But after WLS... they don't do a thing to
me. It is almost like there is no alkie in them. lol. I've only heard of
one other person besides me that alkie gives NO buzz to post op. So it is
rare for sure.

I'd heard all of this about alcohol pre-op...and have found that
unfortunately, I'm still just as expensive of a date as I was before. Oh,
wait, except for the food intake. :)

I have never been much of a drinker, but on a couple of occasions I have
over done it. Post-op drinking is much different. It hits you much faster
and much harder, however (at least for me) you sober up much faster. So
one beer and Im drunk as hell. But I sober up super quick. Normally,
pre-op when you are drunk and do something stupid---you would hear about it
the next day from your friends. Now, you sober up in a second and catch
yourself in the stupidity. I'm not really sure which is better. :P

I have found very little difference in how I react to alcohol (12 weeks
post-op; 62 lbs. lost). I can drink multiple beers (or sweet mixed drinks)
in an evening without any problem -- and I don't get overly-drunk either. I
can also eat sweets and fats without dumping.
Given what I read here, I worry about this. I also don't have trouble
eating a hamburger and fries in one 20-minute sitting. Am I that unusual?
