Question:
I have a question regarding Rh negitive blood types.
I am getting ready for surgery and I have Rh negitive blood type. If i should need a transfusion or extra blood, should I store it for myself? Also, how long is it good for(how long does it store?) — Christina P. (posted on April 23, 2003)

I was wondering the same thing. I am 2 1/2 weeks away from my surgery date
and I have RH negative blood and I've had Rhogam (sp) with the births of my
children. My blood type is rare and I wonder if I should "bank my
blood" as my boss (who is also a doctor) said today. Anyone else had
this come up?

My blood type is "B negative" and I was told NOT to either give
blood or have my blood stored before surgery. I was assured they had my
blood type readily available should it be needed, which it was not. My
surgeon said giving blood or storing blood could make you anemic before
surgery and could've even postponed my surgery. Good luck!<br>

I am RH negative and like Lisa I had to get the shot during my pregnancies.
It was never mentioned with my surgery and I had no problems.I'm sure it
would'nt hurt to bank your own blood, but I also think you would be fine if
you did'nt :o)Good luck! 7mo post-op open rny lost 114#
