Question:
Anyone familiar with Shaklee products?
I've been concentrating on getting my protein so much, I've forgotten about fiber. (Haven't gone in three days...) Is anyone familiar with Shaklee Herb-Lax? It's all natural, so is it okay to take it? They are pills that dissolve pretty quickly. I've used them a lot before surgery. I am almost 3 weeks post-op. Thanks! --Pam — pjnick (posted on November 2, 2002)

Hi,
I had such a bad problem with constipation during weeks 2-4.
The only time I could go was if I took Milk of Magnesia.
I asked a similar question about benefiber and herbal laxatives.
I bought Smooth Move Tea...it is herbal and works very gently and very
well. It is available at my super market or probably most large drugstore
chains as well as health food stores.
I have been taking "benefiber" or "citrucel completely
dissolvable" or Fiber Choice Sugar Free Chewables" since week 4
and have no problems any more.
I think the herbalax is similar to the smooth move tea and don't see a
problem...the tea might be easier on your system
than the pills for a few more weeks. I also try to eat some brocoli and
some apple or pear every day. good luck

When I tried the Smooth Move Tea, I had horrible abdominal cramping. I
also tried the Fiber Choice and although they were really tasty, it didn't
help my problem and produced lots of gas. But they work for some people so
you could give them a try. I have heard wonderful things about Shaklee and
wanted to look into them for WLS patients. I have some friends that love
Shaklee products and highly recommend them. The products are designed to
dissolve very quickly which is a huge plus for us. You just want to make
sure that the laxative product doesn't contain the type of fiber that
'bulks up' or expands too much in your new tiny pouch. I hope you get some
good answers on this one. I'm really interested in their products.

My solution to get things going is fairly cheap and I enjoy it SOOOOO much
:>) I keep a box of Whitman's sugar-free sampler chocolates in the
fridge and have 3 pieces when ever I feel the "need". Gets me
going within a couple of hours and I get the joy of chocolate lol.
Sorbitol and malitol are laxatives for many people. I also occasionally
buy the sugar-free cookies with sorbitol in them - works the same way.
Sorry this didn't answer your specific answer - just wanted to share :>)

At only 3 weeks postop, your body is doing MAJOR healing. Remember,
constipation is not the frequency, but consistency. I would try to push
liquids rather than add some harsh chemical or substance to a very tender
tummy. What does doc say?

Milk of Magnesia is what my surgeon recommended, and it has been a life
saver for me. Only take 1/2 of what the recommended Adult dose is though.
The full amount is way too much. Hope that helps. I know what you are
going through! April (LAP RNY 9/25/02 -38 LBS.)

I love Benefiber, no taste. You can put it in any beverage. And works
better than anything else I have tried.

I go along with the previous poster about benefiber. when I first heard
about it I didn't believe it -- but its true, cheap, and available at
Walmart (or any other pharmacy or grocery store). The thing that amazes me
about this product is that it dissolves in anything (hot or cold) within a
minute or two -- even my ice cold water. It has no flavor and when
dissolved you don't even know it's there -- and believe me, any grit at all
and I notice it. Give it a try --0 it really works.
