Question:
What would be the cost of surgery -RNY?

I live in north Toronto, Ontario. I have done some searching and it would take up to 3-5 years before surgery would be done. I would really like to have the surgery and was wondering on how much it would cost if I went to the states to have the surgery. I weigh about 290 and my BMI is 47. I am in very good health otherwise. Thanks to all for your input. It is muchly appreciated! Take care. Laurie    — Laurie J. (posted on October 9, 2002)

I had mine done in Michigan at BTC in Ypsilanti and my total bill that was covered by insurance was $53,000. They might consider lowering that amount if you are selp pay though. At least it wouldn't hurt to see if they would.

My daughter had her lap RNY in Atlanta, GA. Her all-inclusive contract price (including surgeon, assistant, anesthesia and hospital) was $18,700 in 2000. I understand that the cost with this same surgeon is now approximately $20,000.

I had open RNY 6 weeks ago. I had a small complication that keep me in the hospital 5 days longer than normal. My total bill up to now is running about $48,000. My doctor follows his patients for 5 years.

Laurie, it depends on where you go and how long you would be in hospital. I was also a self-pay and my surgery - including everything - was more than $20,000. I was in hospital only 2 nights and part of another day. Bear in mind that you might have to stay over longer to have a first follow-up visit with your surgeon (mine wanted to see me 10 days after surgery), so you would have to count travel cost, lodging and meals in your surgical costs as well. Good luck to you in your journey! Margie B

I had surgery at BTC in Illinois and my total bill (pre-op visits, surgeon, hospital, anesthesia, radiology, post-op visits) is just over $48,000. I was out of network so I have to pay 30% and BTC has been wonderful about setting up a payment plan.

I had my surgery (Minnesota) on 8/6/02 so far the bills have totaled over $37,000.00 with no complications. (Open RNY now down 52.5 lbs.) But, the hospital I went to (St. John's in Maplewood, has you in ICU for the first day or so to monitor you). Good luck finding what is right for you, it's so worth it!

This is for Laurie: I also am a self pay. I got a discount through my surgeon and hospital at $22,600.00. This includes: surgeon fee of $7,500., anethesia fee $1600., hospital fee which includes everything pertaining to surgery, with 4 day stay is $13,500..Extra were the sleep study, pap smear, mammogram, psychology test, EKG, CBC, Glucose Tolerance Test, and other blood tests which I have not received the bill for, yet. But I imagine all the extras out of pocket expense to be another $2000.00. So if all goes well with me, no extra stay in the hospital which they charge $800. daily, I will have paid out of pocket for WLS around $25,000.00. I have read all post op comments on here, and I know this money will be well spent!! I am so looking forward to becoming the "new me"!! I know expense is by regions; I live in GA. Good luck to you and keep us posted!!

I am 3 weeks post op. I had my surgery in Klamath Falls, OR and the hospital stay alone was $22,700. I have yet to get my surgeon's bill or the anesthesiologist's bill. Looking at the other posts, it goes to show that it varies a great deal depending on hospital. Good Luck!

I have just returned from Brazil. I had a DS with Dr. Marchesini. The total cost for the hospital, surgeon, testing and a binder was about $9000.00. The airfare and hotel were probably another $1000.00. The care if wonderful if not better than the US. I know it sounds crazy, but I am a beleiver. If you should have any questions, please feel free to get in touch! Jackie

This spring I was quoted for Open $12 - 15,000. High end cost of Lap $17,500. This was from Dr. Herrera in Mexico. He offers a good distal when appropriate & will do it either open or lap. This was both his surgeon fees & the hospital fees.
