teena, my close girlfriend had this done 3 yrs ago...She was a little over 300 and now is just below 200 (a size 12/14)...She cannot lose anymore weight and has been trying diligently, with no avail. She can each just about anything and can still drink alchol. Email me if you want me to get you in touch with here. Good Luck!

Teena, I had Vertical Banded Gastroplasty in 1995. It worked, I lost 130 pounds, but after 5-6 years my staple line disrupted and I re-gained 85 pounds. I had a revision to transected RNY in july 2002, in which the chance of a disruption is very small. My weight loss so far has been really slow. If I had known about the RNY and the statistics back in 95, I would have had the RNY to begin with and skipped the need for a second surgery. Now, this has only been my experience and my opinion. I am sure you will hear from others that have had the VBG and are still intact and love it. I just happened to be in the small % that had a mechanical failure with the VBG.

I had a gastroplasty in 1982. It seemed like a good Idea at the time because there was very little structural change internally. Unfortunatually, it did not work as well as people who had the surgery similar to rny. I lost a lot of weight 70 pounds but now I have gained it all back plus. I am trying for a new surgery either rny or bd but I have been turned down by one surgeon. I have my next consultation in Jan. I wouldn't recommend it. It can work but the other surgeries the include malabsorbtion are better. The staples shifted and too much food slips through as the stomach stretches.
