Question:
Severe abdominal pain....What happened?
Last Friday, a couple of hours after dinner, I ate a handful of red grapes. Immediately I had severe pain in upper ab. I figured I didn't chew well enough and tried to wait it out, went to ER a couple of hours later. Morphine and demerol didn't touch the pain and wasn't controled until 6am. Vomitted many times all night. Was admitted. Started running high fever next day. WBC elevated. BP dropped. Had NG tube to pump stomach. Pain was better 24 hours later. Anyway I stayed in hospital for 6 days while doctors tried to figure out what was going on. CT scans, x-rays, colonoscopy, antibiotics. Got better and came home. I only have local hospital and doctors. Nearest bariatric docs are 3 hours away and mine has left the area. They finally guessed that the grapes caused the problem. (I have ate grapes several times before with no problems) I am 15 months post-op. Anyone have similar experience or have any suggestions, thoughts? Thanks! — Randy L. (posted on August 9, 2002)

Wow-Randy, what a nightmare experience. I eat grapes all the time and I am
six months post-op. You wouldn't think that something like grapes would
cause a reaction like you had. Perhaps the grapes had some kind of
pesticide on them that reacted that way? I don't think that a blocked
stoma would have caused a high fever...maybe someone else has heard of
this. Glad your better.
