Question:
IS ITP grounds for rejecting surgery?
I have ITP - idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpora, ie, low blood platelet count. Is there any possibility that could be a disqualifier for surgery? — sandsonik (posted on March 10, 2002)

Hi, it depends on your platlet count at the time of surgery. Because ITP,
and if your platelets are low, you could bleed to death I highly doubt they
will do the surgery at this time. I have ITP was diagnosed in 1993, my
platelets were at a low of 30,000 and was put on steriods that only braught
them up to 90,000 every time the dr tried to wing me off of the steriods my
platelets would drop to a deadly low so i was on them for 2 yrs till i had
insurance to pay for me to have a splenectomy which was a success in 1996.
now my platelets are up to 200,000. I just had the surgery Dec 18th 2001
and i am doing fine. If you want to chat email me at [email protected].
Im curious as to how u are handling your ITP
