Question:
Bmi chart said average weight loss 70 %

what are the chances for 100% weight loss? has any one every lost that percent? is this unrealistic of a goal to hope for?    — [Anonymous] (posted on November 20, 2001)

I know a bunch of post ops from support group meetings. Perhaps 10 % get to their chart weight by loosing it all. Some folks only get there by having excess skin removed. Now certinally everyone would like to loose it all but I will be happy to have lost most of the weight and be healthy. Its work to loose the last 20 pounds you can likely do it if your motivated and exercise a lot.

It was realistic for me. I have lost all of my excess weight and my BMI is now 22.6... ideal for me, especially considering I have some excess skin. I read sometime ago that the mildly morbid obese can expect to lose 70-90% of their excess weight where someone super morbidly obese should expect to lose 50-70%. That doesnt mean that all in the first group reach 90%; nor does it mean that no super morbidly obese person has reached their goal. It's merely a guideline... No one can truly tell you for sure. What I can tell you is that you WILL be significantly healthier with a BMI as of 29 (still overweight) than one of 40-50.

I weighed 278 when I had my surgery , I now weigh 139. I have achieved something I never dreamed possible. BUT, I would have been happy at ANYTHING under 200. The most important thing that happened to me is my health , and when I lost the weight all my major health problems disappeared. Goals are personal and can be achieved but we must be realistic too. I am happy at 139 because I was able to get here but if I had stopped at 199 I would have been greatful that God got me there alive and healthy.

I had surgery on 1/8/01 and weighed 263. By 8 months post op I weighed 139 and was at goal with a loss of 124lbs. Yesterday, at 10 months post, I weighed 129 and my BMI is 23.6. My weight loss has slowed down greatly and I am thankful. I am no longer trying to lose weight but to maintain. So, yes there are MANY that reach their goal weight. However, remember to set that goal at a realistic number. Good luck! Shelley

70% is the average for all surgeries, but the more evasive the surgery the more weight you can expect to lose and maintain. Also it depends on how much you weigh pre-op, the "lightweights" tend to end up closer to goal then us bigger folks. I am 9 months post DS and I weigh 169. I am 31 pounds from 100%, however if I never lost another pound, I would still be in awe of what surgery has done for my health, and quality of life.

I've maintained 100% for 7 yrs, 262 to 110 or so. Depends on the type of surgery, how it's done and your post-op nutrition plan. Some will help you succeed, some will not.

I have lost 100 % of my weight, I went from 253 to 136, which is just about 100% of my excess weight. It is a struggle though, every day i feel like I am getting fat, or I freak out because I think I have eaten too much,It's obsessive, I feel I can eat alot more now that I could 6 months ago, and I am a little over 11/2 years post op open RNY. I can tell you that my life as I knew it has changes sooooo much. I would rather die that ever gain the weight back. I am addicted to carbs, and I do not have time to work out. I am so scared that I will gain it back. I sit at work all day getting office butt, and I nibble and nibble, and I feel hungry, but I can't be. I really need to hear from someone how much they are eating, I used to be able to only fit 1/2 an egg mcmuffin if that, now I can almost eat it all. One of those packets of instant oatmeal should fill me up, but it doesnt really, i can gulp water, but last night i ate a few bites of pork roast from the crock pot, and threw it up. I can eat 1 whole slice of pizza, of course I can remember when i eat 3-4. I am just really scared. Any advice????? I sometimes throw up, just because i feel i have eaten to much, or too much that day !!!
