Have you joined their Weight Management Program yet ? Kaiser HMO of
Colorado requires that you be a member of their weight loss management
program for a year before you can even apply for WLS. Then they only do a
certain percentage a year and it's decided by committee. They also only do
an open proximal RNY at least as of last year. As for the specific
guidelines for BMI, I believe they use the NIH guidelines, but you can find
out at the weight management meeting at Russell Paviliion at St Joseph's.
Since I wanted the DS, not to mention didn't want to jump through Kaiser's
hoops (average weight loss for their year long program is 30lbs), I
switched insurance companies. I switched to Great West PPO and was approved
for the DS (had in California..CO surgeons only do the RNY so far) in less
than 24 hours! I am now 6 days post-op :)
