Question:
Do insurance companies need proof of doctor supervised diet?

I have had several doctor supervised diets, but my doctor as since retired and have no way of getting proof. Will it be a problem with getting approval? What about Weight Watchers, what will I need from them, if anything? Or will they just take my word?    — [Anonymous] (posted on October 6, 2001)

I have Aetna HMO and they require 2 doc. supervised diets/drugs at least 12 weeks each. Maybe you could send in presciptions if you've ever been on phen-fen etc. I have a friend who paid $50 for her med. records cuz her doc also retired. Some ins. accept Weight Watchers/Jenny Craig etc. and some don't it depends on what your insurance asks of you. Good Luck

Look at the booklet on your employer's health insurance. If you don't have one, ask your HR department for one. Not all insurance companies want proof of doctor supervised diets. The only way to know is to find out what YOUR policy requires. Someone else may have the same insurance company you have, but policies can also change from one state to another and from one employer to another. You should also be able to get a copy of the coverage from the insurance company itself. Call the customer service line and ask, but make them give it to you in writing.
