Question:
I feel like I have gas trapped in my esophagus and stomach

Does this get any better after a while? I'm a new post-op (open RNY proximal 5 days ago) and have been put on a clear liquid diet. I'm having problems getting in any liquids since I have a feeling of being full (like thanksgiving day full) after only a couple of sips of water. This doesn't seem to go away after waiting even a half hour. I also feel like every sip is more air than water. Burping doesn't help. I guess my question is...I just want the bloated feeling to go away, how do I get rid of it?    — arebella (posted on July 17, 2001)

I had the same problem. I was told it was swelling from surgery and air that was put in me to blow me up so they could see what they were doing. It will go down and go away after about a week and a half, two weeks, if not then you should call your Doc.

Amy, you might also want to try doing a little walking. I know you're tired and sore right now, but try to get in as much as you can without overdoing it. Walking around really helps with the gas. Good luck!

I was there after my surgery too! The only thing that helped was getting some "gas" pills. I used Wal-Mart's "Equate Gas Relief". It was a God send! Try her. It really helps.

I had the same problem also. It seemed to be the worse part of the surgery. It took me about 2 weeks to feel some relief and I was honestly still uncomfortable for weeks to follow. I don't know of any fast remedies. However, it is true when everyone says that you will feel better, it takes time. Try to remember that and try all the suggestions you get on here, like the walking and gas medication. Things will get better!!

Hi Amy, You can be experiencing the anesthesia in your body. It can remain there for several months. Burping and passing gas are good if possible because it helps to release any airpockets sooner. Can be painful at times. However, I'm not a Dr. but it dsn't hurt to check with surgeon's office if real concerned.

Thanks for the responses! I feel better now 8 days after surgery. Something musta gave because I can now eat and drink enough without that uncomfortable feeling. I think for me it was a sluggish system and maybe exasperated by sitting around although I haven't walked too much. Time heals I guess!

I HAVE BEEN POST-UP FOR 2 WKS NOW AND EXPERIENCE THE SAME THING. MY DR SAYS TO WALK BRISKLY (NOT SLOWLY) FOR 5 MINUTES. THEN STOP, RAISE YOUR ARMS OVER YOUR HEAD, HOLD ONE PALM IN FRONT OF ANOTHER, AND ACT LIKE YOUR SQUIRMING. CONSTANTLY MOVE YOUR SHOULDERS AND BACK AROUND (LIKE YOUR SQUIRMING TO GET OUT OF SOMETHING). I HAVE TRIED THIS AND IT HAS WORKED FOR ME. HOPEFULLY IT WORKS FOR YOU TOO.

I had LAP RNY about eight days ago. I know what you mean about the gas! I noticed when I drank really cold fluids or if I don't take in enough fluids, is when I really get the gas feeling.. So, I try to sip fluids more often to keep something in the pouch rather tnah let it be empty and fill with air.

You probably have Esophageal Spasms and they are sometimes painful. They do not allow food, pills and drinks to go down sometimes. Ask your doctor to check it out. There is not alot they can do except prescribe Porcardia which they give to heart patients.
