Question:
I had asked this question yesterday but did not make myself
very clear. I was worried about the sizing of the compression stockings but, in fact, the inflatable thing that goes around your calf is actually what I was referring to. If your calves are huge will they have those things to fit me? Thanks for any help you can provide. — Sharon R. (posted on June 1, 2001)

It really depends on how big your legs are and if your hospital and surgeon
regularly deal with large patients. Sorry to not be able to give you a
better answer but if a small hospital only sees an occasional bariatric
patient they may not where if they see several large people a week I am
sure your surgeon makes sure they have the proper equipment for his
patients. In fact if your surgeon told you that you would be 'waking up'
with this pumping device on your legs I am sure he has made arrangements to
have them for the very largest patients he does the procedure on.
Since you are concerned, you should call the surgical floor where you will
be staying and ask to speak with a nurse. Tell her your concerns. I am sure
you will get a positive answer.

Sharon, Since the inflatable stocking are velcro, they can use two pair and
velcro two togehter to go around one calf if necessary. They do the same
thing with an abdominal binder if the largest one won't go around your
middle. You'll be okay; they are prepared to handle the situation. Ease
your mind and concentrate on the wonderful changes that are coming your
way! Best of luck!

I was 375 lbs at the time of my surgery and the inflatable leg cuffs fit
with no trouble. I would imagine that even if they had not that the
hospital would have extenders to make them work. They are used to dealing
with us "full figured" people. Don't worry, you will do great.
