Question:
What is the official percentage of weight loss one can expect as a result of surgery?
I am planning to have open RNY and would like to know how much I can realistically expect to lose and in what period of time? — Sharon R. (posted on May 11, 2001)

I had an open RNY on 8/16/00 and I have lost 241 pounds. I am almost 9
months post op and I am still losing 1/2 pound a day.

Generally 70% to 100% depending on the procedure (VBG figures vary) and on
the individual and how they use that tool is a BIG factor.... I had the
Fobi Pouch with silastic band.. My beginning weight was 367 I'm now 153
that's 99% of my excess weight GONE forever and I do expect to get to and
maintain 100% :) To see all the many different types of procedures go to

The NYU center for bariatric surgery lists these percentages. You can view
their site at http://www.med.nye.edu/bariatric/operations.html
RNY: Weight loss ranges from 60% to 80% of excess body weight in patients
with a BMI 35-60 kg/m2, over the first 2 years. This equals roughly 80-150
pounds, depending on your original weight.
DS: Weight loss ranges from 70%-90% of excess body weight in patients with
a BMI 35-85 kg/m2, over the first 2 years. This equals roughly 100-300
pounds, depending on your original weight. After that, there is almost no
weight regain. It is one of the most powerful operations to achieve a large
amount of long-lasting weight loss.

My surgeon's brochure says "An average of 40% of preoperative weight
is successfully lost. An average of 6% weight regain occurs 3-5 years
later, e. g. a 260 pound patient will lose an average of 104 pounds; then
will regain 15 pounds for an average permanent weight loss of 89
pounts." This is RNY surgery. It also says "90% success
rate."
