Question:
2yrs post ops+ health questions
I have enjoyed this site soooo very much and would love to have wls surgery. Going to an apt today to see about a referral. I have read allot on this site from people 1 year or younger. What I'd like to hear is from the people 2 yrs +, and not about the weight that's gone forever...but about your health. How has this surgery has affected your bones, teeth and your overall health. I think that is my biggest fear, being thin..but not healthy. Any information...I'd love to hear it. Thanks in advance!! Cindy — Cindy S. (posted on February 8, 2001)

6.5 years from very distal RNY. I did have to have a revision due to
disrupted staple line. I did not change my procedure at all, as I was very
pleased with my result. HOWEVER, most of us are not given the accurate
post-op nutrition advice we need. My husband is 5.5 yrs out from the same
procedure. Both of us have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. This is not
due to our length of bypass, but due to the fact that we have been using
the wrong form of calcium all these years. We know now that ONLY calcium
citrate with vit D and magnesium will have any effect at all with people
without the use of normal stomach function. However, given a choice of
having died by 1996 or dealing with this now? NO CONTEST. We both lost
sleep apnea, high BP, high cholesterol, our family diabetes, aching joints,
and a host of other things. I had asthma, which was gone immeidately. So,
long term effects are something worth loking into. Please be aware that
Tums & Viactiv and other carbonates are totally ineffective for us.
