Need info on a hernia

I found out today i have a hernia, i am not really sure how i got it, so any information will be wonderful. How long is the stay at the hospital, and how long off of work. and most important why is it Doctors want you to lose as much weight as possible before the surg. Thanks Barbara    — Barbara R.
