Question:
For those who had lap rny, did you have to do a liquid diet and for how long?

Surgeons vary on this, mine requires a 2 day before surgery clear liquid to
clean us out with bowell prep. It gives a little more room inside to work.
After surgery its 8 to 10 days of clear liquids and most are back to eating
regular food in tiny amounts by a month or 6 weeks out. BTW LAP or open
doesnt really effect wether the surgeon requires clear liquids.

I was required to be on a full liquid diet starting 7 days before surgery,
then go to clear liquids 2 days before. After surgery I was on clear
liquids for about a week, then went to full liquids for a week, then
started on soft foods, and gradually worked my way up to reg food items.
Like Bob said, every surgeon had different requirements. You should follow
whatever schedule your Doctor sets for you. Good luck to you. :-) LapRNY

I had to follow a low carb diet for a week prior to my surgery, but not a
liquid diet. Then after, I was on clear liquids for a week, then full
liquids for another week.

I was on liquids 3 days prior to my Lap RNY and 4 weeks afterwards. Then 4
weeks pureed/4 weeks soft. This gives your pouch time to heal.

Clear liquids the day before surgery (nothing red, purple or pink!) and
pureed for 4 weeks after surgery. What you do depends on your surgeon's
protocol..

I was on clear liguids the day before surgery and on a liguid diet only
while I was in the hospital. I went to pureed foods before leaving the
hospital 2 days after surgery. I ate pureed foods, cream soups, yogurt,
applesauce, jar baby foods and such for 10 days then onto regular foods.

No special diet pre-op and afterwards was on full liquids for 10 -14 days
post op. Then soft foods for the next 2 weeks.

Every Dr seems to have a different opinion on this. I was on liquids the
day before surgery and then only while I was in the hospital. I came home
on day 3 being allowed soft foods only. By week one, I was released of any
special diet. Michelle :) -115.5

I think it depends on the doctor. I was on light liquids (nothing red!)
for 2 days prior to surgery, and then after surgery, I was on clear liquids
for 2 days, then full liquids (clear or not) for a month. This included
things like S/F yogurt, jello, or pudding, pureed soups, cottage cheese,
mashed beans..etc. My surgeon inserts a G-Tube into the old stomach to
prevent staple line disruption and nausea and when I had my LAP almost 3
years ago, he left it in for a month...I think he's only doing it for 2
weeks now. Thanks! Denise 316/158

I was on clear liquids 2 before my surgery, and then for 2 weeks post-op
before moving to pureed food. So I was on liquids for a total of 21 days.
Really, though, I think it depends on what each doctor thinks is best.

Every surgeon does things a little differently. Our surgeon does not
require any type of special diet pre-op; places patients on full liquids
for the first three weeks post-op, a soft diet for the next three weeks;
then a regular diet after six weeks post-op. Our family of five lap RNY
patients all did just fine on that plan. Best wishes!

As many of the others have said, each doctor has his/her own way of doing
things. I had no prep requirements, other than no eating after 9 PM the
night before. I was on clear liquids for the first 2 days, and was
required to try pureed food before I left the hospital. I continued like
that for 3 weeks then progressed to other foods, one at a time, as
tolerated.
