Isnt the mini the surgery thats not very popular because it can cause
excess acid troubles? Every now and then a member shows up here looking for
a revision because their mini caused that problem. Why do yoyu want that
particular surgery? In any case its easier to have a local surgeon for good
aftercare.

First for those who've had MGB please don't flame me for this answer
but............our program does not perform MGB because there have been an
excessive number of post operative health problems associated with it.
That's not my opinion - just stating the facts we were given when
considering it. Once we were given these facts we no longer considered it
so I didn't investigate any further. Possibly there's a yahoo e-group that
could provide additional information for you. Best wishes.

Are you sure this is the surgery you want? The majority of bariatric
surgeons believe that this surgery is dangerous. My insurance company has
a blurb on their website about it and why they won't cover it. You may
want to do some additional research on the possible complications.

Don't let anyone discourage you. I am now 4 months out from my MGB and
loving it. I am down 55 pounds, have no problems. I think the reason people
are so negative about this surgery is because they know very little about
it. I cannot help you on a location, mine was done in South Dakota.

OK, first of all, to be sure we are talking about the same operation: you
are looking into the Mini-Gastric Bypass, and not the RNY with the Micro
pouch? Two totally different procedures. I have read that some pretty bad
problems can come up with the MGB. I have also read that most insurances
will not cover it - they actually mention it by name in their exclusion
lists, and I've read only a handful of dr's perform that type and 99% of
other bariatric surgeons will not touch it with 10 ft. pole. The reason is
that it creates a loop bypass which is not as safe as the RNY bypass. There
is much greater chance of ulceration with MGB because the loop part can
cause stomach acid and bile to make its way up into the small pouch. Which
then can present problems with acid reflux. Please do a lot of research on
this. In fact you might want to start with your insurance company to see if
they even cover this type. Then I would do some research on the differences
between the MGB and RNY. Good Luck.

The MGB is now done in several states. NC, Ca., Mo. Michigan, and Fl. I
had mine done in High Point NC in
July 2003. I know it is sometimes misunderstood. I have not had ANY
problems. I am on local weight loss board with 100 members where most
have had RNY. Someone seems to always be going back into the hospital for
complicatons. With any major surgery there will be some that have
complications. My daugher in law is in Medical School and last year was
mentoring with the local Bariatric doctor doing the RNY. I researched the
surgery and when I saw the death rate and complications for RNY I decided
not to have it done, then I researched the MGB and decided it was the best
for me, and the death rate is about 2 in 3000. My dauther in law also
researched it and felt it might be best for me. Having WLS is a journey
that requires much thought and research. Educate yourself, ask many
questions.
Do your research completely...talk to many that have had the different
types and make the decision that is best for you. All my best as you begin
your journey.

I'm scheduled for the MGB 8/10/04 and wouldn't dare have any other WLS.
The mortality rate for the RNY is terrible. Complications with the MGB are
minimal, recovery is speedy. No need to be afraid of a quick procedure.
It's laparascopic and uses a time-tested connection to the intestines.
Plus, your intestines aren't removed. Don't accpet what you read here.
It's not done as much as RNY because it's newer and the doctor that
pioneered it for weight loss personally trains all the surgeons who do it.
You don't read much about it on OH.com because there are just so many of
the other surgeries performed. Do your own research and look at the
website and contact some of the patients. website is www.clos.net Good
luck! Nancy in Texas

I was originally interested in the MGB... but its 'time tested' intestinal
connection (the Biliroth II) has been shown to have problems. That is why
many have spoken out against this procedure. I would get second opinions -
from medical professionals. The website cited here is extremely 'pro-MGB'.
You owe it to yourself to also see other points of view before making a
final decision. Talk with at least one other surgeon who does all
procedures to get their professional take. Some surgeons are biased
towards one surgery over others, while others may really give a good
pro-con picture of each procedure. I wish you the best. Teresa
