Question:
2yrs Postop, gained weight, cant seem to lose it.. HELP!
Hi everyone. I was wondering if you all can help me understand something..
I'm 2 years next month postop RNY. I've recently regained 10 pounds in a very short period of time. I didnt realize the weight gain until my pants were TIGHT! So I've been counting every calorie I eat for two weeks, making sure I eat a ton of protein. I've upped my water intake, and have stayed very active for that time. I havent lost a pound! Not one. Then I remembered the whole measuring thing with inch loss. So I did that (but have nothing to compare that too).. so I put on those same jeans that were TIGHT, and they seemed tighter!!
Am I losing my mind here? I eat and drink right, I do an hour of fast walking/jogging a day plus crunches, pushups, etc. Shouldnt I show a weight reduction by now, or inch loss? I havent even lost water weight!! ANy suggestions as to what may be going on, and what to do?? I'm terrified of regaining it all back! Thanks, Annie — Annie R. (posted on July 26, 2003)

Hi, Take a deep breath and then another, OK, now first STOP beating
yuorself up over your ten lbs. gain and remember how far you have come,
take a size up from what you are putting on right now and then think back ,
think way back isn't that size even remarkable??!! I know it's hard and
fustrating what you are going through but keep doing what you are doing and
it will get better, also go see your Doctor and tell him or her just how
you are feeling and he may have a suggestion or two that might help, but
most important be your own best friend, take-care, e-mail me if you want to
talk futher,,,,,,,, :)

When I go up a few pounds I to on STRICT Atkin's. I lose a pound a day with
Atkin's and only have to stay on a week or two. If you are eating "a
ton" of protein along with other things that could be a problem too.
When we are farther along we can eat more and the body just clings to it.
Remember you're not starting at the top, only 10 pounds! you can do it!
Good Luck!

Hi, Annie. Your dilemma is of great concern to me. I am just under 9
months post op and down over 175, but I worry about the future. Some
people are having such problems keeping the weight off down the road.
Do you think you have greatly increased your PORTIONS? From the beginning,
I mean? Are you a snacker? If so, on what foods do you snack on? You say
you are eating 'tons of protein'. Approximately how much is that?
I would suggest you keep a food diary. Sometimes it is amazizng how much
we are eating without even realizing it. This is an old Weight Watchers
trick. I am SO glad I did the Weight Watchers. I SO learned from that
program. In fact, I may join Weight Watchers, if they will have me, after
I reach goal. Their Maintenance program is the BEST! Anyway, do the food
diary thing and review it at the end of the day. You might surprise
yourself and find the answer to the 10 lb gain. I can sure understand the
panic you are feeling. You must be thinking, "Okay, here it ALL
comes. Right back on!" That would freak me out too. Keep us posted
as to how this plays out. I am SO interested in long term post ops and
their plight and successes.

Annie, are you finding that you are hungrier a lot more than before? Are
you transected? Just something to consider if you are not transected,
staple line disruption is very common if not transected. It happened to me
and a lot of others. I had the revision to a transected pouch and haven't
gained any. I am 2 yrs post op too. They say it is common to gain back
approx 8 lbs before you stablize. You look great so I would not worry
about gaining a little! (unless you are not transected).

Hi, please, don't take this wrong, but is there any possibility that you
could be pregnant? Don't fret too much over ten pounds. Keep doing the
things you're doing and it'll come off. You are an inspiration to me. My
WLS date is 8/5/03.

Hi Annie, I am only 2 weeks post op but my doctor gave me a diet book and
told me that later on if i was to ever gain weight this would be my rescue
diet. Hight protein liquids such as Iso-Pure (GNC) or EAS carb control
(any grocery store, walmart) Protein supplements goal is 40-60 grams(High
protein, low carbs less than 12g, low sugar less than 3g) Vitamins- 2
flinstones, 4 tums, 1 B12, iron. Any sugar free liquid products like Dole
S/F popsicles, Herbal tea, S/F jello. Simple protein powders mixed with
water. Three meals of 2-3 ounce serv.of high protein bev. mixed with H20.
Between meals, drink H20 or other recommended fluids. Goal-Aim for 2-4
ounces of fluid per hour. Your daily goal is 32-48 ounces. NO alcohol or
caffeine or carbonated beverages. Good luck!

You have received some very good suggestions here! Including the
suggestion you might be pregnant (if you've been exposed of course - ha
ha). First, a rapid 10 pound regain is normal. In fact most patients do
it then level off and stay where they are forever. I'm an example of that.
It seemed like I just woke up one morning about a year ago and had gained
10 pounds. I was horrified. I never gained any more though so that may be
a comfort to you. I did exactly what you did - I hit the high protein (I
use supplements) and really walked a thin line, exercised, etc. and at the
end of a month - I'd gained 3 ounces. GO FIGURE! I proceeded to lose my
mind and eat a cheeseburger (or part of one) and some pizza and some apple
cobbler and some ice cream over the course of the weekend - AND I LOST 2
POUNDS! Our bodies are wierd but a small amount of weight regain is not
abnormal. We affectionately call it the 10 pound bounce. However, it's
when the regain gets out of hand that it can become serious. My personal
plan for managing regain is to "detox" for a day. I do NOTHING
but protein supplements for a day and then eat wisely for a day and the
"detox" again until a whole week has passed going back and forth
between eating and detoxing on alternate days. I can usually drop 5 pounds
like this. Would I want to live like that forever? No. But, it get's my
regain under control and is something that I can physically and emotionally
handle. I'm delighted when newbies are in the amazing "fast
loss" phase but it always pains me a bit when I see "8 more
pounds GONE FOREVER". Nothing is forever without some effort. It's
not an eternal diet but it is eternal diligence. Of course this tends to
be true for people who've never been overweight as well. It takes some
effort but for me I can guarantee it's the most effective way in the world
to be normal - or as normal as we WLSers can be. Hang in there!!

Original Poster here: I want to thank you all for your suggestions and
support. To answer a couple of q's, no, thankfully, I'm not pregnant..
(though that would answer the gain, lol). I can eat a lot in a sitting and
I am hungry a lot. I am NOT transected. I dont experience any pain
though. In a sitting, I can eat almost a whole burger with all teh fixings
and both buns. To me, thats a lot. However, my doc made my pouch a 2
ouncer, not 1, so I started off a little bigger. (Also, I can eat a good
sized Tuna sandwich, with a salad on the side.. and still be slightly
hungry. I wont eat more though).

I know the reason though of the gain.. I've been under a lot of stress and
so busy, I havent been able to sit and eat. I scarf down, nibble if I get
a chance. That is where it came from, but for two weeks, I've been
diligent about 'doing it right'. Still it wont come off. I'm just not
sure if what I'm doing to remedy it is enough or I need to do more. THanks
Rona for the detox idea. I'll have to try it. Is there any good new
drinks out now? Havent had one in over 1 1/2 years thankfully. Ha!
Annie.. PS, Hey Rona, remember me? We used to chat a long time ago when my
was Annie Courchane. Good to see ya!

Try Atkins and if that doesn't work, I would get checked for staple line
disruption.

Lots of good stuff here.. I didn't note if anyone said..but you might try a
gym and do a few different cardio things, not just the walking/jogging..
frankly, I gave that up 50 pounds ago because it wasn't enough of a workout
for me...you could also do some weight training which will help your
metabolism... it could be that your body got very used to the place you are
right now and you'll need an extra push to get those few pounds off.. I bet
you will though.
