Question:
Question about carbs

There have been many posts lately from folks struggling with carbs. I am just wondering - I will be months out from open RNY on July 7th. Prior to surgery I was a huge carb addict. The first few days after surgery I thought I would die wihtout carbs. Now, as time has gone on, my desire for carbs is pretty much gone. I no longer desire all the "goodies" that I used to devour on a daily basis. About a month ago I was at a family party and ate a few more carbs than I was used to and for the followig three days I was constantly hungry. I decided those extra carbs must have been the culprit, so I have made a conscious effort to watch the carbs. Anyway, my question is, my carb addition seems to be gone. Will my desire for carbs return as I get further out??? I'm currently still at the point where I'm not very hungry for the most part and not getting moree than 700-800 calories per day. Has anyone ever NOT had the carb cravings come back? Barb, open RNY 4/7/03, 235/185/125-130    — Barbara C. (posted on June 26, 2003)

for me, the answer is a definate yes. I think what happens, is that the further out you get, the more foods you can eat. Then more and more carbs sneak in. And, like you said, the more carbs, the more you crave them. So, I try to keep carbs at bay, but it does get much harder as you are able to eat more and more. Using protein drinks to try and decrease the carbs does help alot. At least for me.

If you don't eat them, I don't think you'll crave them. My problem comes when I get lulled into a false sense of security and I start adding them back into my diet, and before I know it, I'm in trouble.

Hi! That carb craving impulse will plague you for the rest of your life. You will go through cycles, so when you discover you are in one, get yourself out, quickly. DOn't turn to veggies to stop it either... veggies are carbs! Yes, they really are! Carbs can cause you to crave carbs the next day, too. So... listen to your body, hon...and do what it says! I had a proximal RNY in November, and I still don't have any desire for carbs...
