Question:
I am just starting out in my goal of long term weight loss.
I have a BMI of 35. I have had problems with recurring sinus problems and I have been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I have battled my weight my entire life and now with the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, my stamina is all but nill and the weight keeps piling on. I am searching for a surgeon that is willing to take on a patient with what some consider a low BMI. I am in Indiana. — Terri H. (posted on February 23, 2003)

Hi Terri:
From what I understand, many doctors will take a patient with a BMI of 35
with comorbidities. You must check with your insurance carrier to see what
they consider to be comorbidities. I completely understand where you are
coming from. My BMI was also in the lower range, but I had been recently
diagnosed with a herniated spinal disc, bulging spinal disc and torn
annulus. In addition, I have fibromyalgia, possible sleep apnea, chronic
sinusitis, GERD, plantar fasciitis, etc. I know that it is almost
impossible to lose weight with spinal problems and/or debilitating
syndromes such as Chronic Fatigue or Fibromyalgia. I have heard that some
physicians will not work with a patient if their BMI is below 40. You will
have to do some research to find out about this. However, the bad news is
that with Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia and severe spinal problems your BMI
could increase to 40 very rapidly, due to problems with activity and
mobility. Good luck. I hope you find what you need.
Love Grace
