Question:
What does twice your body weight mean?
AT 5'5" i AM CONFUSED AT WHAT MY i SHOULD WEIGH.i HAVE NO HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE ECT. : SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE SAID YOU CAN BE TWICE YOUR BODY WEIGHT BUT I CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT THAT MEANS.AT 5'5" 255 AND MEDIUM FRAME IT SAYS I SHOULD BE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF 127 TO 141. CAN i BE AT THE LOWER END AND STILL BE ABLE TO HAVE THE SURGERY? — Tammie H. (posted on February 8, 2002)

I, too, am interested in what others have to say about this. I am 5.5
months postop open rny. I started losing my hair at 4 mos. At about the
same time, I had appendicitis and had to have another surgery! I can't say
that the hair loss has increased, but I am worried because next week I am
having my gallbladder taken out. Sigh... If the 1/3 thing is true, I
might as well go buy a wig now!

If you are talking about twice our body weight in insurance terms - it
means that for someone 5'5" - normal weight would be about 125 (based
on medium frame - woman) - so twice the normal weight would mean you have
to be 125 x 2 or 250lbs or more to qualify.......hope this helps......:)

Hi, I read your post and thought I would maybe shed some light on it for
you. I was 5' 5" tall and weighed 258 lbs. My Ins. approved my
surgery. I too thought I might be close on this. I had my surgery on
9/27/01 (lap rny). I have lost 61 lbs so far, and I am thrilled. My
weight loss is a little slower than others, but then again, they have more
to lose, so I guess it evens out. Hope this helps you. If you would like

I think you are probably within the guidelines. I looked at your profile
and your BMI is over 40. Also, many insurance companies request that you
either be 100 pounds over your desirable body weight OR twice what your
desirable weight is. You aren't twice what you 'should be', but you are
100 pounds over.

If the ideal weight for someone your height/frame is 127lbs, then you would
have to weigh 254lbs (127x2) to qualify. Shelley

Your BMI is what will qualify you for surgery. Normally 40+ will do it. I
am VERY short, and have to loose 80 # total to be at 128, I was never 100+
overweight, but my BMI was 41 so I qualified.
