Question:
Should I get a Medic-Alert necklace stating that I've had Gastric-Bypass
Irecently read where you should get a Medical-Alert necklace stating that you had Gastric Bypass surgery and Do Not Blindly Place NG Tube, Use Endoscopy. Is this necessary? — Gayla C. (posted on August 31, 2001)

Hi Gayla
I talked to my PCP yesterday about this and he sai it would be a good idea
to have one after the surgery.

On the advice of other AMOS members, I ordered a gold medical id pendant
that says, "Gastric bypass; no n/g tube w/o scope." In an
emergency situation (car accdt., for example) with no xray on the scene,
you don't want parameds sticking stuff down your throat. An unlikely
scenario, but possible. I haven't had surgery yet, but I've got my
necklace ready. Some good sources I was referred to are:
www.gwensjewelry.com and www.goldware-id.com. The second one can also
special order white gold, which is what I wanted.

When I asked my surgeon this he stated it wasn't needed ER staff would see
a 6 in scar on your stomach and know something was up. DONT FALL FOR THIS
ONE! I though about it later and realized at almost any weight we will
have a tummy tuck and if your plastic surgeon does an anchor incision it
will remove you WLS scar and replace it w/ a tummy tuck scar. So ER staff
will NOT look at a tummy tuck scar and say hold on a minute.....Needless to
say I'm going to get one.
