Question:
Has anyone had the surgery with hypothyroid disease?
I have hypothyroid disease and it has ruined my life!!! I was wondering if anyone has my problem and still got to have the surgery? — Sonya Standridge (posted on July 13, 2001)

Sonya, I had surgery 7 months ago and have taken Synthroid for
hypothyroidism for about 20 years. The disease didn't really affect my life
much, except that I struggled to lose the smallest amount of weight and I
had to take medication. I've done great since surgery, but will still take
my meds the rest of my life. Something you should know that I found out the
hard way---a few weeks after surgery, I started taking my multi vitamins
and calcium citrate w/D and some extra C. I was feeling really tired, and
having thyroid symptoms. I thought maybe I needed to have my dose
increased. Turns out, I was taking my calcium in the morning along with my
Synthroid---a big NO-NO!! The pharmacist said to wait several hours after
taking Synthroid before taking the calcium. Seems the calcium kept the
Synthroid from working (don't know the medical term), so it was like
quitting my meds. Be sure to let your pharmacist know all supplements you
are taking as many do react with prescription meds. Good luck to you.

Ditto to susan's post. No problem with the surgery or losing weight. I am
at goal right now, and loving it.
Read my profile. I could not be more pleased with my results.Good luck to
you.

I have hypothyroid too and I am having the surgery. My Dr. and the surgeon
said it doesn't matter. I was also told that losing weight may take me out
of hypotyroidism enough to stop my meds...we'll see. I take a very small
dose of Levothroid.
Good wishes to you!

I have been hypo for years and on Synthroid.
Post op you just have to watch the timing of your Synthroid and
supplements. Cant take the Iron too close to the Synthroid either. So I
take a vitamin with iron in the morning, the Synthroid in the late morning
before lunch, my other vitamin with iron after dinner and my calcium before
bed.
It was confusing for a few weeks but I have it now.

Sonya, I have Hypothyroidism and extreme Anemia...I take Levoxyl as well as
935 Milligrams of prescription Ferrous Sulfate Iron each day. My surgeon's
only concern was my iron levels, as he said that while I was in ICU (on a
respirator because of pulmonary difficulties) he almost ordered a
transfusion for me. He had no problem with my thyroid condition. Colleen
