I have seen a post about the "cottage cheese test" somewhere on
this site. I don't remember the details, but it is something you can do to
test the size of your pouch. I suggest you go to the library and search on
that topic and see what comes up ... I bet you find an answer.

I posted the question. In answer to your question of "what is the
cottage cheese test?" --All I know is that in my little pre-op
booklet, it says (and I quote, but can find no other information in
there....This falls under the question, "How do you know how large the
pouch has grown to?" ...The size of the pouch after surgery is the
most difficult variable to be able to measure. The upper GI series,
endoscopy and other tests have not been reliable. The COTTAGE CHEESE TEST
that we discussed earlier gives us significant information as to how large
the pouch is, and that is the reason why we ask you to do this test on your
return visits to our office starting at three months." (but I find no
other reference to it?) thanks. I did not find it in the library, either.

Are you a patient of Dr. Flanagan's in Oregon? His web site
[http://www.oregoncenter.com/bluebook] talks about the Cottage Cheese Test.
If you look at the site menu, a clinical paper link is there for
"UNDERSTANDING THE FUNCTION OF THE SMALL GASTRIC POUCH; APPLICATION TO
POST-OP TEACHING AND EVALUATION By Latham Flanagan, Jr., M.D., FACS...You
will find more detail about the test there. I couldn't locate my specific
reference to the process, but in general it is this: The GB patient is
given a specific amount of cottage cheese, say 8ozs; You then eat as much
ccheese as it takes for satiety. The left over amount is weighed and I
assume changed to cc's measurement. The amount you consumed indicates the
size of your pouch in relation to the original size [30cc's in the case of
Flanagan, 20cc's in my surgeon's original size pounc]This becomes a
measurement tool for the changing size of your pouch.<br>
This whole article is a terrific guide to our new life expericne with the
pouch tool and what it and we can do to be as successful as possible. It is
kind of my second bible [next to my surgeon's recommendations] for post-op.
AND that is coming up verrry soon. May 31! Best to you. Carolyn B.
