Question:
Is there an age limit?
I am still in my 50's, but not much longer. My BMI is over 50. Tried and failed soooo many times, but you all know what that is like. This seems like my last chance. Are there people that have had bariatric surgery in my age group. I am just starting my search and have not found anything yet about age. I have called my insurance company and was told that they do pay for this surgery. That is as far as I have gotten. Thank You for your help. — Jan T. (posted on May 11, 2001)

I believe I've read that sixty or sixty five is the limit. You've still got
time if you're fifty something. :)

I am 53 and talked with the staff at Dr. Kanes office in Mt. Prospect, IL.
They told me many many people have this surgery in their fifties with no
problems at all. I had the same concern, but I feel at peace with it. I am
waiting for Insurance approval. Hang at this site, read, join the chat room
and be encouraged. There is hope :)

I gave this operation to myself for my 54th birthday. I'm 5'3" and
weighed 258. I had the RNY open surgery on January 8 and have lost 56 lbs
and I feel GREAT and have had absolutely no regrets about having this
surgery! Good luck!

I was 54 years old when I had my surgery 14 months ago. My husband is 9
weeks post-op and is almost 58. I have lost 140 lbs. and he has already
lost 65 lbs. We are healthier and happier today than we have been in over
15 years. My surgeon sets 65 as a "general but variable" age
limit. This was quite possibly one of the best decisions that we have made
in our adult lives....go for it!

My surgeon's brochure asks if you are between ages 15 and 70. I don't know
if this is surgeon's preference or what.
