Question:
Surgery on the Nerves to the Stomach?
Has anyone had lap surgery on the nerves going to the stomach as a result of an ulser? My doc says that this is the solution to all the problems I've had. What are some side effects? Did it help your problems? — Bridgette C. (posted on March 30, 2001)

Well, I do not have any first-hand knowledge concerning this. However, I
have heard it mentioned on this board that some surgeons perform a vagotomy
(cutting the vagus nerve that goes to the stomach) during the initial WLS.
This is done to prevent the unused portion of your stomach from producing
acid which is the cause of many of the ulcers that people get after WLS.
Some surgeons appear to be more proactive than others. However, I am sure
that those that don't cut it initially have their reasons. (it reminds me
of the fact that some surgeons will automatically take out gall bladders
while others take a wait and see approach).
