Question:
What kind of baby food?
is good for the first few weeks post op. I was looking at the store today and picked the fruits - is this a good choice? What about the fruit juice? — Sharon Jones (posted on March 22, 2001)

One thing to keep in mind is that during the first stage after surgery, you
can have yogurt but you have to choose the kind that does NOT have fruit in
it (or nuts). The same idea would apply to baby food -- although the
infant type baby food is probably all pureed and strained. I didn't do
baby food either, but instead did sugar-free yogurt and pudding, creamed
and strained soups, instant mashed potatoes and such. The very last thing
I added to my diet was fresh fruits and vegetables -- so keep that in mind
as you add new foods. Your surgeon or dietician should give you very good
guidelines to follow.

Personally, I could not handle the baby food, but one of my WLS buddies
used it a lot. The jars a just about the right size for our early post op
tiny appetites. My friend was afraid of getting a tummy ache or thowing up
- she is about 5 months out and has never thrown up or dumped, so it worked
well for her. At first I know she like the fruits and the cottage cheese
with bananas. Some people also like the meat sticks - they look like
vienna sausages and are a pretty good source of protein.

When you get to pureed foods they say stages 1 and 2 baby foods, when using
the baby food fruit, you need to watch the sugar, be sure to read labels!
