Question:
How much protein is enough??
I take a B-12 and a Multi-vitiaimn a day but do not take any protein? Will this hurt me? My doc never said anything about taking a supplement. — Mary S. (posted on February 8, 2001)

I just saw my surgeon and nutritionist yesturday during my pre-op. They
STRESSED getting my protein in. Apparently it helps the staple line heal
appropriately and while you are losing the weight, the protein is used
instead of extracting the it from your muscles (the heart is a muscle).
They told me many people have trouble getting protein in. I was given a
trick to help that. Buy Carnation instant milk, prepare it double strength
(more powder) and mix it with skim milk. Use this to sip on or to prepare
milk based recipes like mashed potatoes. I thought that was a wonderful
idea. From every angle I hear how important it is to get protein in--even
if you've never had WLS and just training for a marathon.

My Doctor has told me to get in a minimum of 90 grams per day, but to shoot
for 100 g per day. It's not easy, but I do my best, which is pretty good. I
hit a minimum 0f 90 grams at least 80% of the time & often hit 100
grams. I have added more protein supplements, both drinks & bars.
