Question:
Can you color or perm hair after surgery?
I heard that during the first year after surgery ,we should not color or perm our hair. WHY???? — totoclark (posted on February 4, 2001)

I had surgery 4/4/00 and I started coloring my hair about four months after
my surgery. I was concerned that with the hair loss that it would damage
my hair. I went to my hairstylist and my hair was healthy. I have been
coloring my hair every 2 months since with no problems. I have not heard
that we should not. I believe other ladies on this site have had perm. I
guess alot depends on the condition of your hair. I do not perm my hair,
because I wear a pixie cut. Talk with your doctor and hair stylists.

I TOO ASKED THIS QUESTIONS WHEN I WAS JUST POST OP (SURGERY DATE WAS
8/18/00) BECAUSE I BOTH COLORED AND PERMED MY HAIR. I STARTED LOOSING MY
HAIR AT ABOUT 3 1/2 MONTHS POST OP. I WENT TO MY STYLIST AND SHE SAID WITH
MY HAIR THINNING AT SUCH A RATE, SHE WOULD RECOMMEND I DROP ONE OF THE
PROCEDURES. SO NOW I HAVE GREAT BLOND COLOR AND HIGHLIGHTS AND A NEW
"SPUNKY" (MY AUNTIES TERM) HAIRCUT THAT DOESN'T REQUIRE THE PERM.
I ALSO TAKE BIOTIN THREE TIMES A DAY AND NOW HAVE BIOTIN SHAMPOO AND THE
HAIR LOSS SEEMS TO BE SLOWING DOWN. I GOT BOTH THE SUPPLEMENT AND THE
SHAMPOO ON PURTIN.COM.

I had my hair colored at 3 months post op and haven't had any problems. In
fact, I'm going back for a touch up next Saturday. I'm 5 months post op and
have lost a little hair, but I had so much to begin with you certainly
can't notice it! In fact my haridresser says I'm down to the amount of hair
a normal person has. I decided that I needed a new look and didn't want to
have white hair at only 42! Between the new hair color and 85 lb. weight
loss I'm getting a lot of attention!!!

I had never heard that about not coloring or perming your hair after
surgery. I'm almost 3 months post-op and had my hair colored about a month
ago. As far as I can tell there weren't any negative side effects. Just
the thought of no color for a year....shudder.... Good luck! :)
