Question:
Does anybody else regret having this surgery?

I am 8 days post op and I REALLY regret doing this,I had some complications in the hospital (not too serious), but I am on a clear liquid diet until next week when I see the doctor and I am sooo hungry! I mean HUNGRY! I see all the commercials for food and I want just a bite of everything. So far I have been good and stuck to this clear liquid diet but it is so hard.I am sore and tired and as soon as I woke up in recovery I was like....what did I do to myself? I dont understand because I researched this to death and I REALLY wanted to have this done...did anybody else have this and will it get better???? HELPPPPP Hungry in PA LOL    — Stacey S. Stacey, I think we all regretted it at your stage. It does get better when you start introducing foods. I remember thinking that those first 6-8 weeks were never going to end, and now I look back and it seems not only so long ago, but so insignificant as well. You feel like you're the only person in the world who is going through this and it's even worse when you don't drop 30 lbs in a week, so you don't see results right away. But it gets better, I promise you, and soon you will be very happy with your decison. Good Luck and God Bless!

I haven't had the surgery yet, but i have read enough to know that what you are going through is perfectly normal. You went from eating whatever you wanted to sipping soups and gatoraide. This would be hard for anyone skinny or overweight. Hang in there girlfriend it will get better everyday. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers. When you look back on this a year and 100 lbs later you'll be glad you did it.

Stacey ~ I'm 4 1/2 weeks post op and yes I did feel the same way as you. Believe me when I say that it DOES get better. I was pretty miserable on the liquid diet but when I was cleared to eat soft solid foods it seemed like things returned to normal.

Stacey, Hang in there! I am 6 days post op and thought maybe you would like to try the diet I am on. I am not hungry. This is what my dietician recommented. Lipton cream of mushroom soup, strained (it comes in a box) and Carnation instant breakfast(I like the french vanilla mixed with diet jello.) I get 2 ounces every hour of something. Lipton also does cream of chicken and that is good also. She said I can have lowfat eggnog, which I love. Everything has to be strained. I also bought lowfat, sugar free frozen yogurt. I have not thrown up, knock on wood, and there are no hungar pains. I think the biggest thing is not to dwell on what I can't have. The smell of food is not even bothering me. I have also found if you add an ice cube or so and blend (the cold food)it helps a great deal. If you would like to e-mail me please do so. [email protected] good luck to us both!

Stacey - I had surgery a week ago tomorrow (15 January), and I know exactly what you are talking about. I woke up from surgery having that regretful feeling, and I have at least one of those, "What have I done?" thoughts every single day. I'm on a soft diet, and before surgery, it seemed I would have plenty to eat, and plenty of variety. But I'm finding that all I eat are cottage cheese and mushed-up macaroni and cheese, because they're the only things that seem like REAL food. On the way home from the hospital, we passed an 18-wheeler with a McDonalds billboard on the side of it, and I thought I might die if I didn't get a Big Mac right then and there! My husband had a little mini-pizza this afternoon for lunch, and I wanted to lick his fingers when he finished! Trust me - I KNOW. Six to eight weeks seems like a very long time to eat this way, but look at it this way - a week has already passed! Soon, we'll be cleared to eat more foods we really like. I make little bargains with myself, and I am taking everything one day, and sometimes, one MEAL, at a time. E-mail me if you want to :) [email protected]

Stacy I'm 6 days post-op and I'm not hungry but my mind keeps the pressure up that I am. Just don't loose sight of why you've done this and set your goals. As you heal each day your getting stronger and as your getting stronger your going to be busier and less time to let your head talk to you about food Hang In There 1 step At a time. Mike Hicks

I had months of "What Did I Do". I too had several complication. They are all behind me now. I even had a Hernia Repair, and Tummy Tuck a couple of months ago. I know, that I would have probably died before reaching 2001. I now have a chance at a normal life. Good Luck and God Bless --

I am sorry you are feeling this. We are all different, and react in our own very personal ways to this surgery. I am eleven weeks post op. Although I have never had any regrets, I did screw up on the diet early on, and had to go to a clear liquid diet for two days. I really disliked it. The regular liquid diet I was assigned upon leaving wasn't so bad. Maybe this will help...I was often (mentally) hungry for something I used to love, like a certain kind of pizza, or Kentucky Fried Chicken. Once I was off the liquid diet, I would try them one by one, and that always seemed to end the obsession with that item. I rarely had it twice. At this point, all of my food obsessions are gone, with the possible exception of a McDonald's hamburger, which I may try this week.

Are you taking any kind of protein supplements? I have heard that if you have a protein drink at least twice a day, maybe 3 times if you can get it in, not only will it cut down on the hunger and cravings but it will also help your weight loss along. Also how much water are you taking in? Water also helps curb hunger. I dont know what kind of postop diet your surgeon gave you, but you may want to look into these options. I have heard people swear by them. Good luck. -Tanya
