The point of pre-op breathing exercises is to help yu focus on the work of
breathing before you have an incision and its subsequent pain to deal with.
Practice taking slow even deep breaths through your nose and feel your
lungs fill with air. Practice holding a pillow against your stomach and
doing the same breathing. After surgery you will need to do this type of
breathing a few times each hour while you are awake to keep your lungs wide
open and functioning at their maximum.
