A medical clearance by your PCP is simply an approval of your ability to
tolerate the surgery and anesthesia that your pcp sends to the surgeon. He
may base this approval on you past and current health history as well as
tests such as a complete blood count, chemistry panel, EKG and Chest xray.
If for instance you ever took phen-fen he would probably add an
echocardiogram, which bounces sound waves off your heart to check the heart
blood flow. Or he may give a medical clearance with restrictions, such as
you being followed by a pulmonologist while you are in the hospital because
you have a history of breathing problems. It's for your own safety, even
if it feels like a pain in the butt. I would be wary of having major
surgery without a clearance by a physician who knows me. Hope this helps.
