Question:
Flush out the bad?

I know this is horrible but I really want to know. If I eat 3 potato chips because I get a craving for it and then drink something right away...won't the beverage flush the chips right out so I wont absorb the bad in it? I definetely am not practicing this so please dont write mean responses to me. I just want to know....everyone gets a craving or has to just try a taste of something. I want to know if it would help to drink right after?    — [Anonymous] (posted on August 14, 2000)

EAT YOUR CHIPS AND DONT WORRY ABOUT IT IF YOUR DOING ONLY A FEW ONCE IN A WHILE ITS NOT GONNA HURT JUST DO OVER INDULGE YOU NEED THE ROOM FOR NUTRIENTS, AND YES EVERY ONE HAS A SNACK ONCE IN A WHILE

If you are going to eat the potatoe chips don't flush it with water because it might not go down. I had an experience with peanut butter crackers where I tried to get it down and it got stuck in my throat. May be you can try the WOW potatoe chips. They have no fat in them and little calories I believe. They could cause lose stools though.

In my experience, if I eat something with too much sugar or fat in it, drinking right afterward will make my reaction worse, not better. If you just eat it plain, it will sit in your pouch and slowly, gradually go out into your small intestine. But if you drink something, it will wash everything into your small intestine in one sudden rush. But, if you are only eating 3 chips like you said, I doubt that is enough to affect you either way.

I wish it were that easy! Drinking after the chips will move them throught the pouch but according to my surgeon the fat, salt and calories are still absorbed in the intestines. He recoommends not drinking while eating so that I will not feel hungry so soon after eating. When I want chips I have been eatingthe WOW chips with no problem. I hope this helps and good luck!

My surgeon says that eating and drinking at the same time causes the stoma {the new "opening" from the stomach to intestines}to stretch, so this probably is not a good idea. Don't feel guilty about eating a few chips now and then, as long as it does not become a "grazing" problem.

You cannot "flush" calories through your system without absorbing them. That is why people throw up - to avoid absorbing the calories. You will absorb the 'bad' in whatever you eat.
