Question:
Is WLS safe for fatty liver with imflamation[NASH]?
I had a neddle biospy done. It showed fatty liver with inflamation. I've heard rapid weight loss with this can lead to death. Any one have this and had surgery? Help!! — Kathie B. (posted on May 2, 2000)

I also had a needle biospy of my liver done, along with a CT scan, and an
MRI... I had a fatty liver and scar tissue, they also called it a mass or a
tumor, but they found no cancer cells.. I had my WLS on Oct. 21, 1999 and
have lost 100 pounds and I am fine... I don't think a fatty liver alone
will keep you from having the WLS..

From what I understand, a fatty liver is common for morbidly obese people.
I would discuss this with a liver specialist, and find out what they
recommend. Losing weight is great, but not at the expense of your life!
Best of luck -

I, too, have fatty liver. Fatty liver is a result of obesity. From what I
have read, if you don't lose the weight, it will turn into cirrhosis,
whether you drink or not!!! I have never heard anything about it being
dangerous to lose the weight quickly, just that it was necessary before the
liver could repair itself. And fatty liver can be a result of diabetes.
I am trying to get a referral so I can have surgery. I wish you luck with
your's.
