Question:
How much B-12 do you take postop?
Hi everyone, I'm 3 months postop and still feeling tired and wiped out more often than I'd like. My surgeon was asking me about vitamins and she mentioned B-12. I haven't been taking it; she never mentioned it before. So I went and bought some (1000 mg. sublingual tablets at GNC) but there are really no instructions on how to take it. How often do you take it, postops? How much at one time? Thanks! blessings, Ann — [Deactivated Member] (posted on December 4, 1999)

Hi Ann,
You take one tablet a day under your tongue until it is all gone. It takes
several minutes to dissolve. I hope this helps.

I'm still pre-op but during my visit with the nutritionist, she told me I
would require a B12 shot every month for the rest of my life. She stated
that they could be injected from home, similar to what is done for
diabetes. You may want to check to see if this option is available. Good
luck.

As you can see from the above postings different doctors have different
ideas. I'll add one more. I take one tablet once a week. Check with your
doctor on what she recommends and this should all be followed up with lab
work to make sure you are doing OK.

ANN,
Go to your doctor immediately!! Did you have RNY surgery? If so vitamin
B-12 SHOTS are a mandatory! You should be getting an injection of 1,000 mg
every month for at leaast the first year then every 3 months for the rest
of your life. Vitamin B-12 is what keeps your brain working correctly.
Your body does not absorb b-12 good enough to take it orally at this time.
PLEASE< PLEASE contact your nutritionist immediately for more
information on this. Hope this helps.

my doctor says the most recent studies on b-12 show that in fact we do
absorb it a lot better than previously thought. i just had my bloodwork
done after 4 months and my b-12 was just perfect. so ask your doctor, but
keep in mind that it is not truly 'neccessary' anymore
