I have AETNA insurance, and I got approved for the surgery. But I had some
major health problems-diabetes, high blood pressure. It was still a fight
to get approved, but I got the approval.

Go to word search on the home page and type in AETNA. Several
people have been approved with it. I have AETNA US Healthcare
and am waiting on a decision.

Yep!!!
I have Aetna US Healthcare-HMO. NO problems. I am in Northern Virginia
and I went in for one consultation with my doctor about 6 weeks later I
received a call saying that I had been approved. I NEVER even had to go to
another office visit or anything. My plan offers coverage for morbid
obesity and I was conscious of this before I selected it, eventhough I had
only briefly considered having the operation. I have had a wonderful
experience with them, and now something that was just a distant fantasy is
becoming a dream come true.

I actually tried to go to a surgeon who was out of network. She had left
Aetna's network, but I didn;t know it... so I went to the visit and was
surprised at how little diet history one had to provide. In the end, Aetna
turned it down on the basis that the Doctor was out of network, but they
gladly referred me to an in net doc.
I met that staff one week later (they had a cancellation) and was thrilled
with the whole approach they took. I did notice that though I was in
"good" health, it was helpful to list out the provious trouble I
had in health, and let them connect the dots, so to speak... insofar as it
applied to my obesity. (eg. I had high cholesterol but so does my 100lb
grandmother. I had asthema as a thin person, but still have it. I did,
however, experience tremendous crippling back pain -- which was likely
weight related).
I would approach it like that, if you feel that you are very very healthy
and obese. I'm failry sure that otherwise, the surgery is considered
cosmetic. There is no way, it would be approved in such a case.

I have Aetna US Healthcare-Federal HMO and was approved in ONE day! I had
Open RNY with Dr. Goodman in New York on October 15, 1999. Since then I
have lost 60 pounds. Good Luck.
