Question:
Are there any doctors that will reverse RYN for non-emergency reasons?
I had my surgery about 8 weeks ago and I do not think that I can deal with the lifestyle changes. I have seriously been considering having my surgery reversed. Are there any doctors that will do this for me? — [Anonymous] (posted on August 5, 1999)

I could not imagine wanting the surgery reversed for non-emergency reasons.
Is there anything any of us who have gone through this longer can help you
with? Gee, please don't give up, it is awesome when the weight starts
coming off and the clothes are huge and people don't recognize you because
you look so good!!! Yes, changes are made but good changes. I do not know
of any doctors who would do it with a good conscience if you are not having
problems medically. Please think about it and let us know if we can help!!

I can say, that this man that I know that had gastric bypass done
has lost so much weight, and is still loosing, that the Dr is threatening
him, that if he doesnt keep some weight on that she will have to do a
reversal
on him. This was straight from his own mouth.

Are you sure you really want this reversed. All big changes in life
Marriage, death of loved one, job change etc. bring with it a certain
amount of stress. You are only 2 weeks into this give yourself time to
adjust the magic number for most things is 1 year. Why don't you give
yourself a year and I bet once the weight comes off and you start feeling
better you will feel differently. You could look back on this posting then
and think what was I thinking? You may even feel differently in a few
weeks!

What is it about the lifestyle changes that would make you want to
potentially remain morbidly obese for the rest of your life? 8 weeks is
not very long ... it took a lifetime to get where you were post-op.

A postop depression and mourning period is pretty common after this type of
surgery. I went through a period during the first two weeks when I
wondered if I was out of my mind. But it passed. Did you not know about
the different eating style that would be necessary and are you truly
disappointed, or did you know there would be changes and think they would
be easier than they are? If you knew about the changes in eating and have
difficulty adjusting, I think you should give it more time. If you truly
did not know that you would have to eat differently and cannot accept that
as tolerable at all, then doctors can reverse the surgery. You should keep
in mind, though, that surgery on an obese person is more risky than on thin
people. Taking the risks of surgery in order to help you attain a healthy
weight is an acceptable risk. But to take on the risk of surgery to bring
yourself to a state where you will continue in an unhealthy medical
condition, is a little questionable. My doctor told me that he had a
patient (man) who had the WLS and lost from 320 pounds down to 170 pounds.
Then for some reason, he decided that GOD didn't want him to have mutilated
his body and he begged the doctor to reverse it. The doctor reversed the
procedure. He said he saw the patient two years later and he weighed 450
pounds and could only get around in a wheelchair. The man begged him to do
a RNY again.

Hello,
It's only been 8 weeks since you had surgery done. It is very overwhelming
at first, but it will get easier with time. The first few months are the
hardest, going from liquids, to semi liquids to soft and then more regular
foods. With time, you'll be eating regular foods, just in smaller
quanities, except for sweets and maybe some types of meats. Don't give up
yet. This surgery will change your life for the better- it's like a
rebirth. Do you have any support groups in your area? Try to find one,
you'll get some much needed support. Check with your surgeon. I had to have
my surgery reversed, for life threatening problems. The surgery to reverse
the original was harder than the first and left me with some severe
complications. The original surgery is not meant to be reversed. Please
give yourself more time before making such a decision. Talk to a lot of
people, along with your surgeon. But look into a support group. I wish you
the best of luck. Hang in there, and go one day at a time. I bet you can do
it. I will keep you in my prayers. Blessings, Bev. (\O/)

What are you having a problem with exactly?? I'd like to help. The first
4mo. are the hardest. Some days I could eat something and the very next day
I couldn't. It was hard, I thought I'd never be able to eat like a normal
person again. That really does pass. I had RNY surg. in April of 98 and
have lost 160# so far. My life has changed but for the better. My health
is much better and the energy I have and the things that I can do now that
I couldn't do before is just amazing. I would be happy to chat with you
daily if need be. I just hate to have you give up now when freedom is so
close for you.You can do it, it isn't always the easy answer that we
expected it to be but it is definitely worth it. Please reply to me and I
will try to help you however I can. God Bless YOU-you are worth it!!

I agree with everyone, please give yourself time to heal and to adjust. I
know for me, today is a lot better than last week, and I am sure tomorrow
will be even better. Please don't give up just yet, you have come too far.
I know it is hard, but with support, I know you can do it. If you would
like to email me, please feel free to, I don't know if I have the answers,
but I have a big shoulder.
Hugs,
Edie

I wrote this question I guess 2 months ago. I must say that things have
certainly changed. At the time, I was very depressed about the decision I
had made, mostly because I still felt sickly and nauseated. The little
food I could have did not taste the same. I always had a funny taste in my
mouth and white coating on my tongue. I thought that I would never be
normal again. But now, 4 months after surgery,I can eat virutually
anything I want. It seems that while my portion size is considerably lower
than what it use to be, it is not much lower than the rest of the normal
size world. So far I have lost about 60lbs and feel absolutely wonderful.
I sincerely know that I could have never done this on my own. For at least
a year before the surgery, every morning when I woke up I said to myself
"today is the day". Well, it never was. I have been overweight
all of my life, but have never seemed to be able to lose and keep off any
significant amount of weight. The more I tried, the bigger I got. This
surgery has truely been a miracle in my life!! Thanks for all of your
support!!!!!!!!!
