Question:
I've always used lots of salt. Anyone have post-op experience with this?
You can tell I've just been approved; I am full of questions. I have always eaten my food with lots of salt. I haven't read anything about the effect of salt post-op. Anyone have experience with this? — [Deactivated Member] (posted on June 30, 1999)

So much depends on your doctor & your type of surgery. For us, with
our distal gastric bypass, we have no trouble with salt at all. I'm almost
5 years out and have never had that good ol' salt swelling we remember so
well!

I crave salty things. Popcorn, tortilla chips, pretzels.
Love fat free pretzels, can eat them without feeling guilty
rather than something like the tortilla chips.

Your taste and cravings change after the bypass surgery, and probably will
affect your salt intake.

I had my Open RNY 9 weeks ago, April 24, 1999. I use to like salt as well.
Since I don't eat much food now, and I also eat different food now, I have
been craving salt. I have found a answer for this. First, my surgeon (Dr.
Marema) said that this is very normal. I have bought some pretzle rods at
the store. I suck on them, (I don't eat them). After sucking on two of
them, I am fine. I then throw the remaining pretzle away, and I have no
more desire for salt. Hope this helps.

Hi, I'm 9 yrs post. I don't hardly use salt anymore. I do use many spices
to change flavors but after the 3 months on clear liquids, my taste buds
sharpened and I no longer feel the need for salt, besides, it makes me
bloat like a fish.
Take care. Christine in AK
