Question:
Any suggestions for keeping weight up pre-op?

I know this sounds crazy, but with a BMI of 41 I am nervous about losing weight before surgery and being denied at the last minute. I know that happened to someone; I read it on this board. I am awaiting insurance approval, but my dr. gave me a list fo things to do while waiting, like walking daily, starting to eat more protein, etc. I want to be compliant and make things go easier after surgery, but I don't want to lose weight and blow the whole deal. I really need this surgery! Now that I have made the decision I just want to get started with everything. Anyone have any advice for me? My doctor is Rose Mary Jones in Indianapolis. I don't think you need to worry. I was asking the same question in the chat room and another person told me she was post op BMI 39. I have a BMI of 37 and I am considering RNY. As long as you are 100lbs overweight, you should be ok. If you lose 75 lbs, then that's another story.

Ann - Your Doctor knows best in this case. Don't worry about eating protein and walking, as this will build muscle. Muscle is heavier than fat. And you will need the strength you develope now to help you through those first few months. You will also want to tone up, and not sag after your weight loss. I have a BMI of 41.3 and because I am active I am solid and don't look as heavy as I actually am. Exercise and protein have not made me lose weight, that's why I am preparing for surgery. GOOD LUCK WITH YOURS!

Hi, I asked the same question of my surgeon. The answer was your starting BMI is the number they go by. Hope this helps!

I don't know how I managed to do it, but I lost ten pounds between my first surgical consult and my surgery date. I took that few weeks until surgery to eat in every restaurant I knew I would not be able to enjoy fully again. Outback Steakhouse, The Olive Garden, In And Out Burgers, etc. I wouldn't worry too much about it. If they have decided you meet the necessary requirements for the surgery, you shouldn't have any problems. Go out and enjoy yourself.
