Question:
If you have a Laproscopic RNY do you still have a G-tube after surgery?
What about drains, or a NG tube? — Heather Y. (posted on May 27, 2005)

Really, it doesn't matter what surgery you have. It all depends on your
surgeon. Mine does not do drains, so didnt' have one... but some do
weather it is lap or open...ask your surgeon... they will tell you what to
expect. If they dont tell you what to expect then there is something
wrong!!!!
Good luck babe, you will do fine even if you do have drains!

I had a lap rny as did my sister. Neither of us had NG tubes. I think it
goes according to your Dr., and according to your individual medical needs.
Our drains were removed, 1 the next day, and the other the day after. I
had this same thing w/ my TT, different Dr., 2 tubes, removed a day apart,
no seromas, no problem. Maybe I don't retain too much in the way of
fliuds. Check w/ your Dr.. Good luck!!

Although it varies from surgeon to surgeon, I think the majority who do hap
RNY don't leave NGs or drains in. I didn't have any. I am sure I had an NG
down during surgery, but I don't recall it being put in or taken out.

I had both the g tube and the jp tube. My doctor does that. The jp was
for drainage and the g tube was because I had sleep apnea and just in case
I was not able to hold anything down I could have been fed thru the g tube.
I kept the jp tube in for one week and the g tube in for 2 weeks. They
were uncomfortable but I kept them taped up so they wouldn't move and it
was bearable. When they came out I didn't feel a thing only much much
better. Just ask your doctor. I am sure he will tell you that before your
surgery. I hope I helped some.

I had open RNY and my drainage tube was removed the day I was released from
the hospital (7 days after surgery). The reason I was in so long was
because they couldn't place me in a rehab facility on the 3rd day.
Anyway, the drainage diminished daily and removal of the tube was
painless...weird feeling the tube stretch, but no pain. After that, I had
a bandage on it that came off my itself after about 6 days, and now I just
tape a thin layer of sterile gauze on it to keep any ooze from staining my
clothing.
Hope this was helpful. --Karyn

Many laparascopic surgeons will not use drains after surgery given the pain
and discomfort they cause. There is no absolute need for them. I did not
have any drains post-surgery from my laparoscopic RNY.

My son, who weighed 442 at the time of his lap RNY, had both a G-tube and
JP drain. The G-tube was put in place to allow the new
"connections" more time to heal. They were in for a week or so
until his first post-op appt, then both were removed. I also had Lap RNY,
no G-tube, but a JP drain. Our docs were both in the same group and that
is their standard procedure. The JP drain had to be emptied a couple times
a day, and was a little uncomfortable towards the end, but really no big
deal.
