I am very offended by this new tv show. I will not watch it. The funny
thing is my thin friends feel the same way. Who are they hoping will watch
this. This is by no means a good form of entertainment. I saw a
commerical that Mtv is doing a similar show. I am just disgusted.

I would guess the same people will watch this that watch all of the other
reality TV shows. I was watching "Starting Over" the other day at
my PCP's office and they currently have a girl on there who is a few months
(I think 4) post-op and said she didn't want saggy skin because she didn't
want to be a "skinny fat girl, un-unh, no way!" were her exact
words. Any time you watch a reality show you are probably going to be
disgusted and upset. They count on it for ratings.

I knew I was not going to watch it when I first saw the commercial. Anyway
baseball is on!! I think we are always going to run into people who say
"we took the easy way out" even if that was true SO WHAT!!! I
don't believe there is soul out there who wouldn't take a pill or potion to
change something about themselves that they did not like. I fully excpect
and accept this surgery to be the hardest thing I will ever do and we all
know this because unlike some we are educated on the topic and have tried
everything but surgery to take this weight off..Girl brush it off your
shoulders and keep on shopping in the little people section because that is
what I plan to do! : )

I agree with Adrian G..........it is absolutely NOT the easiest way out but
who cares if ignorant people think it is. And even if it was easy, what's
so wrong about taking the easy way on something instead of the hard way.
People do it ALL the time....none of us want to do things the hard way if
we can avoid it. I won't be watching the show but then I don't watch any
of those shows that are just on for the shock value. I'm way too busy
living this wonderful new life, eating my small meals, taking my vitamins,
drinking my protein drinks, exercising, shopping for small clothes, running
on the beach with my grandkids, etc., etc., etc.

I watched the show too, and their first words peed me off to. You know we
always here "easy way" Well just think about it in life dont we
and shouldnt we take "the easiest way" if you get the same
results, as good, and even better results? ie large mountain n the
way...use dynamite, or a sledge hammer, bake it from scratch, or pre
prepaired? I would like to see those people in 1 year, if they kept it
off, changed their lifestyles, habbits. Its hard for us too, but we have a
tool to help us. I am proud, and happy I had WLS. We are also faced with
temptation of foods, and many of us work out at the gym too. Sorry to
ramble, but all this was going through my mind while I was watching the
show.

I am so glad that other people felt the same way I did after watching this
horrible show. I only saw about 15 minutes of it when they were weighing
everyone and was shocked and disgusted. What "healthy" eating
plan are these people on to lose 22 lbs. in 1 week? These people who
obviously need help with getting their weight and lives under control are
being made to feel like failures if they did not lose an excessive amount
of weight in 7 days. And for the host who I used to love Caroline Rhea
should be ashamed at the things this show is making her say to these
contestants, like who is weighing your team down and trimming the fat. In
the real world would these people be able to lose 5, 7 even 10lbs. in a
week? I don't think so and then to made to feel horrible about not losing
enough because money is involved is just unbelievable and very wrong. I
won't watch fear factor for the same reason the disgusting things they make
people do for money just floors me. I am very happy that I took the in
their opinion the "easy way out" and changed my life for the
better or I never would have been able to lose the weight. I am very glad I
did not hear this comment or I would have been even angrier than I was in
the first place. Sorry to ramble take care everyone and let us relish in
the fact that we are doing something positive to change our lives and
celebrate everyone's victory here not just the big ones.

This has to be the saddest, sickest "reality" show ever created.
I really feel sorry for the people on the show. I won't watch it.

I watched the show and thought it was a complete mind f*ck. But with
regards to your comment about "the easy way out".....I used to
say that and perhaps even feel that way. EVeryone says that on this
site....so I guess I just went along with the program. In reality this is
the easiest "diet" I have ever been on. Getting to the point of
surgery was really tough - many hoops to jump through and a maze of
emotional rollercoasters. Other than that, having my body dictate to me
how much I can eat and to some extent WHAT I can eat, is a complete
blessing and basically has made this a no brainer. I cant over indulge
when I want. The choice and thus the "will power" piece of it
has been eliminated. Of course, there are still choices about fats and
carbs etc. But the truth is, I cant eat enough for it to make a whole lot
of difference.
I think the reason this surgery was developed is that doctors knew we
needed an easier way - because constant vigilance with regards to diet and
exercise long enough to lose 200 pounds is not easy - actually its nearly
impossible. So, I disagree with you and many other's on this site. This
was not an easy decision and the road has been interesting - but it has
been WAY easier than regular diet and exercise!

I think those who call this the easy way out are just jealous that we found
something that works, and they don't have the courage and dedication and
stamina to do what we are doing.

I didn't see the beginning about the "no easy way out", but I
watched the show and will watch it again. It was about the reality of
making a drastic life change. It really motivated me to live out the life
choices that I made when having this surgery (eating right and exercising).
They are teaching them to make correct food choices and to exercise,
vigorously. I don't think gastric bypass is the easy way out, nor do I
think what these people did was an easy way out or an easy thing to do
(being willing to go on National tv). I can't say whether these people
will keep the weight off that they lose or not...but whether by personal
trainer day in day out for weeks or through gastric bypass we are all
attempting to retrain ourselves to be healthy, and I admire that. I don't
think gastric bypass is "the WAY" for everyone, just like I
didn't have the opportunity to have a day in day out personal trainer and
team effort competing for money to motivate me to lose weight.

Oh, I don't know .. it may be disturbingly like an old-time sideshow, but
at least they are making the point that at some point in your life, you
have to do "something" about your health. Whether it's surgery
or "going it alone", everybody's path is different. I applaud
those folks for having the courage (I started to say 'guts') for going on
national TV, especially with the potential for humiliation. I hope they
all find what they are looking for.
As for the "easy way out" comment, shoot yeah surgery is easier
than diet and exercise alone. Like someone else said, why not take the
"short cut" if it's available to you? That comment, oddly, does
not bother me. It's like I (we) know the secret; we've been handed the
keys to the kingdom. Ironically, I have had folks (even RNY patients)
question my surgery of choice (LapBand) because they think the RNY is
easier. It's like, if you were going to take the "easy way out",
why not take the "easiest"? LOL, it is to laugh.

I never heard her say anything about the easy way out, although I did hear
her say that they were going to do things the 'old fashioned way, with diet
and exercise'. Maybe I'm odd, but I have an enormous amount of respect for
every one of those people. They are doing something that I didn't have the
strength to do, and hopefully will be sucessful. I don't feel sorry for
them at all, of course they must be embarrased etc but they all new what
they were signing up for. I'm sure it comes down to a great opportunity to
get healthy, work with a trainer and possibly take home a quarter of a
million dollars. I can think of alot worse things. As for WLS being easy,
for me it was. I am only 9 months post op but controlling my weight isn't
even an issue anymore. The tool works for me and I can't overeat or indulge
in sweet or fatty foods....it's a no brainer. I just sail through the days
and thank God this was the answer for me. Hopefully the 12 people on that
show will be as lucky with the path they chose! I wish them luck. Angela -

I've seen ads for the show, but have not watched it. Anybody that calls
WLS easy doesn't have a clue. But losing weight the way they are on the
show isn't easy either. My hat's off to them if they're successful and can
keep it off. Even if you have WLS, it's still a struggle to adhere to the
eating/exercise program to keep it off and many don't. It's all in how
much dedication you're willing to put into whatever method you choose.

I have not had the surgery yet but from my research I feel the surgery is a
added to tool to help those of us who tried traditional diet and exercise
that did not work. I did not see the show. I feel that any weight loss is
hard rather you do it yourself or you have the surgery you still have to
work hard and exercise and watch what you eat. Everyone is different and
can not do it with diet and exercise alone. I was told by a doctor that
traditional diets work for people who are 10,20,30 pounds overweight but
when it comes to being 100 pounds or more overweight the success rate for
this group of people is slim to none. I feel that no one can judge
anything they have not been through.

I guess I really don't understand why people don't like this show. I
thought it was a great insight and opportunity for these people to change
their lives. If I had the chance, I would do it. Losing the weight would be
great, not having to work, or take care of kids/family, and dedicating a
few months to losing, plus the additional bonus of maybe winning some
money!?!?!?! Sounds like a plan to me. I mean, it didn't cost them
anything, plus they get a personal trainer and their meals are limited to
healthy foods (mostly). Maybe this is some of their "last
chances" before surgery, no one knows what these people are thinking.
I just know if I had this opportunity as a last resort before surgery, I
would take it. (And the part about surgery being the easy way out, no she
shouldn't have said it, but it isn't the first time someone has said it,
and surely won't be the last.)

I know exactly how you feel. I saw that show and make the same noice. I
wanted to call them up and say, You don't even know what you are talking
about. Oh well, we all know that is wasn't the easy way out. HUH?

I'm pre-op and was very upset by the show. The bottom line that came
through very clear was that being obese was unacceptable. There's already
enough bias against large people. I don't see how this show is going to
bring more sensitivity towards the obese.

I am obviously going to be the minority here...I just don't think it is
such a big deal when people say that..and I thought the show was good. I
don't find it offensive when people say that because I don't think it is
meant to be an insult. It looks like I am one of very few to admit that
this surgery made losing weight a heck of alot easier than the "old
fashioned way"...if I hadn't had surgery, I wouldn't have lost 160
lbs, bottom line, because the other way is too much work that I didn't have
in me to give. SOOO, if, on that show, those contestants have it in
them...I will root for them, and I will be envious of what they are going
to, and I was never able to, accomplish.

I refuse to watch a program that degrades people the way this one obviously
does. It's why I don't watch Jerry Springer and Maury povich and other such
shows that use people for ratings. It's disgusting.
