Question:
chewable vitamins

What is the best chewable vitamin in terms of content? I have Vista chewables but I really don't like them. Thanks! Open RNY 6/2/03 236/122    — Treva F. (posted on September 17, 2004)

I use the Centrum adult chewables for my multi vitamin and have not had any problems (but I take extra iron, vit C, B-12 and calcium in addition to the Centrum). They are pretty cheap, about $6 a bottle at Target or Walmart.

CVS has a good generic brand of chewable vitamins. Once a month they have a few days where the vitamins are buy one get one free. Their content is very good. I supplement with B12, Iron and Calcium. 4/03 283/172

I'm a Flintstone's Chewable gal. I take them twice a day. I don't need the ones with Iron (post-menopausal and good labs) so I can't vouch for them. The only palatable store brand I've found are the Target Children's Chewable. If the budget is tight I get them. The others I've tried -including the ones at my favorite store Trader Joe's- are awful. But everyone's taste buds are different - and they can change a lot over time. I'd just first be sure of the good content and then find ones you can tolerate.

Walgreen's has one that is made just for bariatric patients, it is called Optisource and is orange flavored. Really good. You can order them from their online store if you don't have a local Walgreen's or one that carries them.

Treva, check out the backside of the bottles to see which ones have more of what you are looking for content-wise. at 2 1/2 years post-op, I do both the centrum chewables and the flintstone chewables. could I do regular pills? Yes, but I take enough regular pills-the chewables are a break.

I wasn't able to find a chewable that was palatable for me. I couldn't deal with the aftertaste, the grittiness or chalky texture--depending on the vitamin. I tried Centrum liquid--YUCK!!! It tastes just like vitamins smell! I finally broke down and ordered the vitamins & calcium supplements that my sister takes. The group of doctors who did her surgery (US Bariatric in Fort Lauderdale) have their own supplements developed specifically for bariatric patients--www.bbvitamins.com. I ordered a 90 day supply of the multi vitamin & the calcium--with shipping I think it was around $75.00, that works out to about 83 cents a day even with shipping. You take one multi 3x a day & 6 calcium a day. If you take iron--you shouldn't take the calcium & iron together. I'm not on iron, so I take 2 calcium each time I take a multi. All of their supplements are in clear gel capsules--so if you have trouble or unable to swallow the capsule you can empty it into something to drink or eat. These have been a godsend for me, because I would much rather swallow a pill than chew one. Terri
